End of the road for Markov?

Andrew Zadarnowski: Defenseman Andrei Markov is not expected to get a contract offer for Lokomotiv of the KHL. This could be the end of the line for Markov.

If it is indeed true and Markov "retires", should the Canadiens hire him as a defenseman coach or PP coach?

Never really liked Luke Richardson as defense coach and Muller hasn't been doing much with the Power Play.

Any of you Habs fans think that Markov can be a good fit as an assistant coach in Montreal?

Discuss!

Mods: Feel free to move the thread into the Habs board... Though I was in the Habs board. Apologies!

Not sure if you're serious with the coaching thing.

Markov is a quiet/shy guy who spoke to nobody. Not sure those a good qualities for a coach.

He was shy on camera, doesn't mean he never spoke.

I'm pretty sure he had some clout with the players.

I think our whole defense situation would improve under his guidance.

Robinson is also a coach I would want to see behind the Habs bench.

a good player doesn't automatically become a good coach,

he has zero experience, what makes you think he would be a good coach?

He was a high IQ cerebral defenseman. I'm thinking that he can be a good coach in teaching the right way to play defense. Plus the fact he has experience with international coaching styles he may be able to bring that knowledge to the fold as well.

He was a PP specialist all his career. I think having the general back with this team could be beneficial.

The General behind the bench and the Destroyer out on the ice can only help.

It's an interesting idea, especially to help with Romanov who I'm sure could learn a lot from him while helping him adjust to the city especially since his teammate Okulov opted to re-sign with CSKA as I had hoped he would come over with Romanov.

Kovalchuk is most likely going to be back

Richardson has been great as a d coach! Love how quickly the d make stops and transition the play up ice. Big improvement from the Julian/JJD combo.

Big improvements with individual players like Petry, Kulak, Chiarot. Hope he stays.

Markov as a development coach or PP consultant? That makes more sense to me.

Skilled and smart players usually do not make for the best coaches. If you look around all professional sports leagues, most coaches were role players for the professional careers.

The biggest reason for that is skilled or smart players just automatically do what they do. They don’t necessarily think the game, they just play it. The game comes natural to them and they just read and react. They see the play unfolding before it happens and adjust accordingly. You really can’t teach that.

Now for many role players they do not have that uncanny ability. They have to think the game when they read it. That is why the tend to make better coaches.

How did Gretzky do as a coach?

Does he live in Russia? He might prefer the KHL if he even has any desire to coach. He played a long time and made some good $$$ so he probably doesn’t have to.

I also think most guys have some coaching experience before they get behind an NHL bench though I assume there are exceptions to the rule. I doubt he’s interested in retiring to ride an AHL bus, making a lower salary, with no guarantee of an NHL position. I can’t see him in the college coaching mode or riding around the Canadian Junior route either.

While not ALWAYS the case thos is usually how it works. An "average" player skill wise has to work much harder at the technical things just to play at or near the level of those to whom the game comes more naturally. Anybody who has coached for a significant amount of time will tell you this
