Value of: Emelin/Beaulieu to Detriot

Trying to gauge value here:

We have an obvious excess of LHD, one of Emelin/Beaulieu would be most likely to be traded.

Our biggest need is a 2nd line LW.

Do Detroit fans have interest in either of these 2 dmen, and what would be a fair return?

If we move Beaulieu, our left side looks dangerously thin:

Markov - Weber
Emelin - Petry
Pateryn - Barberio

I'd be open to moving Emelin, but only if we have a suitable replacement lined up (i.e. Kris Russell).

I think right now, our biggest priority should be addressing the defense, not the offense. We already have a top-6er in Radulov, and Shaw could fill in as the LW on the 2nd line, or maybe even one of Carr/Hudon/Lehkonen/Andrighetto.

After losing Subban, we lost a big portion of our puck-moving ability from the blue-line. We should be looking to add a PMD right now, because Markov can't skate the puck like he used to, Weber doesn't play that style, nor does Petry. Beaulieu is our only option, but unless he improves quickly, we're out a big part of our puck moving.

Based on how his salary is structured Franzen has been paid most of it up front. The next four years he makes 3.5 mil, 2 mil, 1 mil and 1 mil. If he doesn't retire after this year there's no way he's playing for 1 mil at 38 years old. So it might as well be a two yr deal for a two yr deal/one yr deal.

A third line of Franzen - Desharnais - Shaw would look great for the 30 games Franzen is healthy.

Franzen is done. Last season ended for him when his concussion symptoms resurfaced without even having taken a hit in the previous game.

I think Habs need to address their LD before they add to their top-6. Training camp can help find the sixth of their top-6. Andrighetto has a year of experience and has shown he can potentially be a top-6 forward. Carr and Shaw can move up and down the line-up. Hudon, Reway, Lehkonen, and Scherbak can definitely step up to the plate.

MB said he signed Radulov for one year because he doesn't want to box out the young prospects from taking their place.

So Habs need to add another puck moving D to help.

There is no excess of LD in Montreal

Franzen will never play another game, he is the savard/pronger category of eternal LTIR until the contract expires.

Franzen will be LTIR the rest of his career, he won't retire early because it will result in recapture penalties because his contract was very front loaded.

If you look at our pairings:

There's no way you put Markov w/ Weber imho, so we either use Emelin or Beaulieu on the top pairing.

Markov-Petry
Emelin-Pateryn

Emelin at 4.1 M is too expensive on the bottom pairing imo.
Barberio, Redmond, Sergachev can slot on that bottom pair.



We have excess at d, both from a cap perspective and personnel perspective.

Emelin is paid too much but he is still better than Barberio by a fair margin imo.

Detroit and Montreal have the exact same thing, An over abundance of LHD so this deal doesn't work out here.
