LOL @ Ovechkin with 100 more goals than anyone else.

Well the number 2,3,4,5 and 7 guys all have missed alot of time with injuries.

AO is the elite "sniper" of his generation but sadly the nature of the NHL is as such that staying healthy is about alot of luck.

And the guy with the most games played over that time is the oldest of them all!

If we suited up all baseball infielders with NHL goaltending equipment and credited them with outs when the ball hits their equipment - that would be the equivalent of what we have turned goaltending into. We have taken one of the most exciting aspects of the game and dumbed it down into a wall of equipment. It wouldn't make baseball a better game and it doesn't make hockey a better game either.

I tend to agree with you that goalie equipment has reached epic ridiculous size proportions but to say that there are no elite snipers is also totally wrong as well.

Goal scoring depends on the conditions in the NHL and are era specific in large part.

Really enjoyed this article! Never realized how deceptive Getzlaf's shot was.

That's because he unfortunately rarely takes it, but when he does, it's a howler.

If he's including Kopitar, I wonder if it has something to do with two-way forwards (definitely the topic I'd be most interested in seeing), rather than another snipers one. A goalie wouldn't be the best position to provide insight on that though.

Maybe, but Kopitar's probably a better goal scorer than a playmaker. He has a nasty shot, just prefers to hold the puck instead of take it.

This part made me think of the habs. Some of their fans claim dominating 1-goal victories- and I'll give credit to the victory part (the most important part)- but shot differential can be just as misleading as... well just about any stat, really.

Here I thought he was talking about the Sedins given that we're in his division and what not.

I'd actually like to hear his opinion on pesty goal scorers. I know he's talked about Perry already, but how does he handle players that are always looking to make contact and create chaos in the crease?

Interesting how he broke down Kane's shot attempt. obvious about the defenseman going down and the cross crease help, but reading a shooter's hips and direction change of his feet... our goalies never mention these to us shooters as tells.

Also the change of angle for Getzlaf's shot, Semin and Ovi do that all the time and it makes for their wicked wristers. Doing it off-balance on 1 foot really isn't off-balance for an NHLer though... it helps them lean on the stick for flex.

Love these kinds of articles. Getting perspective from the folks on the ice definitely help drive points home.

Also, the homer in me of course loved the Toews/Kane priase. Their obvious complimentary styles even when on different lines obviously played a huge role in what's made us a great team over this mini-dynasty era.

The only centers with higher GPG are Stamkos, Crosby, and Malkin.

Definitely overrated. :sarcasm:

Though he still can't mantain level he reached during shortened season, Tavares is only behind Stamkos and Ov in the last three years.
