No one in the NHL is going to feel sorry for us.

We're just going to have to deal with it.

Yup I guess the fans here can get out the crying towels  . Hockey can still be a really rough game and they do allow teams to hit back. My hopes are that the Jets rise to the challenge.

Another random thought (and I expect to be vilified :sarcasm:), I chuckle at all this "Leafs are a dirty team" stuff. When I read stuff like that, I am hearing the voice of a 6-year old kid on the playground

Definitely my age, but my dad, brother, and dozens of my friends were basically shocked at how the Leafs ran us out of the rink - just like Calgary last year in the playoffs. This Jets incarnation is soft as butter, and it was cringeworthy embarrassing to see Joe Thornton jack around with one of our smaller - and arguably our best player - with no reaction or answer from anyone on the Jets.

Sad for us old guys to see :(

Ah, told by who?

Maurice was directly asked in todays presser if it was the Muzzin hit that caused the injury.

He deflects the question stating Ehlers subsequently "got into a number of collisions and finished the game but I don't know if the injury can be pinned to any one hit specifically."

After the Muzzin hit & Ehlers returns from the tunnel, Thorton hits Ehlers without the puck at centre ice & Ehlers goes down hard. In all likelihood Thorton thought embellishment should have been called, perhaps explaining what happens next.

On their next shift Thorton cross checks the same shoulder Ehlers took in the Muzzin hit with enough force his stick breaks. No penalty is called & Thorton skates to the bench for a new stick whereupon he cross checks the same shoulder again this time receiving a penalty.

Ehlers continues playing and looks fairly unaffected, playing excellent on the ensuing power play. At its conclusion Thorton returns to the ice and waits until after the whistle to skate towards Ehlers from across the ice & cross checks him in the same shoulder a third time. This time a look of pain (or disgust?) by Ehlers can be seen and he engages in a stick swinging incident at Thorton. Both go to the box with 2 minutes left after which shouting matches begin from each penalty box with lineman Dubois and Simmons having similar words on the bench for which they are both expelled.

Ehlers is a tough little bastard and I'm sure would have had no issue dropping the gloves with Thorton. The fact the Jets were down in the game is the simplest explanation why the two didn't fight as having Ehlers lost to a major penalty when the game is about to open up 6 on 5 isn't a good trade off for 4th liner Thorton.

One could also suggest that an already injured Ehlers wasn't about to put himself in further danger, dropping the gloves against a 6'4" 220 lb Thorton. An already injured Ehlers might also explain why the near incidental contact at centre ice had Ehlers go down in the first place. Perhaps it wasn't embellishment as much as it was the result of playing injured.

The same shoulder three times? It seems that the two incidents were to both shoulders. Not sure which one was worse.

I believe all the hits and cross checks were directed at Ehlers right arm.

I was ashamed to be a Jet fan last game. For a team to allow a 4th liner with 4 inches and 50 lbs abuse and chase Ehlers around was an absolute disgrace. The only thing that makes it worse is that I've seen this so many times that I think the Jets are happy with this. Anyone with an ounce of pride would have ear holed Thornton the first time he looked sideways at Ehlers.

We all had some fun when we see stars like Ehlers fight in the playoffs last year or Laine this year. At the end of the day the question is why do they feel the need to do fight. To me it looks like they feel that no one has their back. ITS FREAKIN EMBARRASSING!

Yea I don't have any interest in feeling sorry for ourselves. When things get rough you either respond or you don't. This is a leaf's team that has been shit kicked season after season and tried to win with skill. They have added some physicality now and they also have skilled guys dishing it out to set the tone. If the Jets think a line has been crossed then one might advise them to up the intensity.

Wonder what leafs would have done if Lowry chased Marner around the ice for 10 min picking a fight with him? I’m sure they would have been like the Jets and let Marner take care of Lowry himself ....

Certain Jets should be embarrassed to put on the jersey for their next game...

Coaching staff should be ashamed that 4 guys are not sent to taxi squad for a few games to show them one of the reasons they get to cash an NHL pay cheque was ignored ....

I've mentioned time and time again that the Jets need to abide by an "eye-for-an-eye" policy or risk getting run out of the rink like they did in the playoffs against Calgary and in the playoffs against St. Louis. I was soundly scolded by several members for my caveman attitude. I was even told that revenge and equally "edgy" play would not solve the problem. I respectfully disagree. And even if they're right and it won't help Jets win games, I confess that I will gain personal satisfaction if another team's player paid the price for a cheap shot against the Jets.

Gordie Howe had a saying "I play religious hockey. I think it's better to give than to receive." Howe wasn't talking about a gift exchange. Next time at the draft table, I'd like to see some players who play that way make it onto the Jets' draft board.

And to those who say that would be silly, I harken back to the Jets being run out of the rink physically during the playoffs, as well as numerous cheap shots this year that has cost us man-games lost. It's far better to be the hammer than the nail.

Thornton definitely thought Ehlers dove. I thought the same myself.

I don't think a couple of cross checks are enough to separate a shoulder. It may have may the problem worse, sure, but I don't think it's the primary factor and I think Ehlers is out for the same length of time regardless.

Leafs fan here coming in peace to wish Ehlers a full recovery. The Jets are a very good team and I've really come to admire Ehlers this year. Despite some of the things we've been hearing I really don't think either team has been playing "dirty". The rivalry has become more heated, though, and the physicality between these two teams has been revving up. In the past the Jets had a very big team and had really punished the Leafs whenever they played each other. The Leafs have tried to address that this year by adding more toughness and physical presence - that's what we're seeing this year between these two teams. In the end, however, I don't want anyone to get injured. I'm looking forward to the playoffs and wish the Jets success - except when they play us ;)
I appreciate your polite gestures, sir or madam.

I must however state that I feel there has been some dirty plays, namely:

-Galchenyuk headshot on Lowry
-Thornton headshot on Perreault
-Foligno boarding Morrissey
-Perreault headshot on Tavares

Thanks for the kind engagement.

Both can be true. The Leafs are dirtier than a pig in a pen but the Jets are also as soft as the soft serve ice cream at Dug & Betty’s in St. Boniface.

Going after Thornton would have been a waste of time. Go after McPornStache if you really wanna make the Leafs pay for this crap.

Nothing in the rule book that says you can't hit Mathews, Marner, Nylander, and Reilly all game long, finishes your checks, and when their bruisers come looking for a fight skate away, fighting isn't mandatory for good clean hard hits.

the Muzzin hit was shortly after Thornton broke his stick cross checking Ehlers arm. I wonder if it was the same arm/shoulder?
Caught Maurice hinting at a neck injury to Nikolaj in his discussion about Adam Lowry and injuries.
Wonder if that is better than a shoulder, or worse, longer recovery?

I believe losing Scheifele and Laine against Calgary was a bigger factor than "playing soft".

The dirty retaliation type stuff gets punished more than the original infraction. I'd like to see head shots out of hockey altogether and responding to one with another head shot is ridiculous in my opinion. Hit them hard, get physical, but every headshot has the potential to ruin someone's life and the fewer times that happens, the better.

Jets don’t respond as a team...they don’t defend each other or retaliate against liberties taken. They don’t chase down Marner or Gaudreau with retaliatory threats or actual hits. They are above this type of hockey and I hate it.

At this point, we won't catch Toronto and home advantage is meaningless. I think we're resting Ehlers just to be cautious and I'm alright by this.

But this is a common thing for the Jets this season. They've been the victims of cheap shots all season long. And they aren't just a regular face-washes... they're losing very valuable players. Time for some frontier justice, especially if the laughable on-ice officials and player safety incompetents don't do their jobs.

Season is over. Hate to say it and it sucks but it is what it is. Really glad we didn't trade a 1st now. Hopefully we can get a good pick at the draft.

I hope karma befalls the Laffs

They are not "resting" him man, teams don't "rest" a guy for a few weeks going into the playoffs considering how long it takes to get back up to speed. I am all for signing the biggest goon in the ECHL for the remainder of the season and playing him 20 minutes a night against the Leafs the next time we play them. Pulverize them before the playoffs.

Anybody know at what time in the last game the injury occurred? Hoping to rewatch on the pvr right away.

EDIT:Found it. Muzzin hit occurs with 8:58 left in the 3rd period. Ehlers goes off immediately and then off the bench down the tunnel.

He does return for his regular shift however and takes several more before the 4:54 mark at which point Thorton breaks his stick cross checking Ehlers in the shoulder. Thorton then goes for a new stick where he returns and cross checks Ehlers in the shoulder again with a fresh stick.

Thorton engages Ehlers again at 2:43 cross checking him again in the shoulder whereupon Ehlers slashes him back and the go off with coincidental minors.
Does this answer the question that everyones been asking over the past couple of days?

Yup.
