Season series: The Florida Panthers defeated the Edmonton Oilers 2-1 at Rexall Place on Jan. 10. Panthers forwards Jaromir Jagr and Jonathan Huberdeau each scored a goal, and center Mark Letestu scored a goal for Edmonton. All three goals were scored in the first period. Panthers backup goalie Al Montoya made 24 saves for his seventh win of the season.
Oilers team scope: Edmonton begins a three-game road trip with back-to-back games against Florida and the Tampa Bay Lightning, followed by a game against the Dallas Stars on Thursday. Left wing Taylor Hall, Edmonton's leading scorer with 46 points (16 goals, 26 assists), has two points (one goal, one assist) in his past nine games. Edmonton signed goalie Cam Talbot to a three-year, $12.5 million contract extension on Sunday, one day after he made 31 saves in a 2-1 shootout win against the Calgary Flames. Talbot has a .949 save percentage in his past five games and has worked his way into the No. 1 job. "I judge it not just over this last stretch, where he's been very good, but from what I've seen before," general manager Peter Chiarelli told the Oilers website.
Panthers team scope: Montoya is expected to make his 11th start of the season after Roberto Luongo played Sunday in a 3-1 loss at the Tampa Bay Lightning. After a franchise-record 12 straight wins, the Panthers have lost three games in a row. "We needed to compete harder, put pucks on the net," coach Gerard Gallant said. Despite the losing streak, Florida still leads the Atlantic Division with 57 points. Center Nick Bjugstad scored a goal in the third period against Tampa, his first since Nov. 21 against the New York Rangers. Florida plays its final four games before the All-Star break at BB&T Center.
