Overpaid for Benning based on what? Your completely arbitrary opinion? Matt Cane has put together a fantastic work based on metrics which are used to predict a player's free agent value.

Caggiula was set for 2 x 1.3M. He got 2 x 1.5M (-0.20M in value).
Benning was set for 2 x 2.15M. He got 2 x 1.9M (+0.25M in value).

Based on this methodology, Chiarelli actually saved 0.05M on those two deals. The back-up goalie contract is a whole other mess though.

Hey may overpay on the whole but with the cap going up next season, 1.9 million for a bottom pairing defenceman is a great contract.

Great Value for a RHD who can do what Benning can do. He has upside to be a solid top four contributor too if he can be more consistently at the top of his game.
