I’ve never seen a coach have deer in the headlights on the bench as much as him

It's a point I made to Gordoff in a PM, and belongs in the JM thread, but in my dim assessment, Montgomery is an excellent offensive specialist. He got 109 regular season points out of this roster.

Placing to one side a "quality over quantity" approach that simply does not work even in the regular season, never mind the playoffs, I'll give him that.

But he is not a head coach.

He is an assistant coach.

That is what he is best suited for, both tactically/strategically and relative to communicating well with today's players.

He's the good cop, and there's nothing wrong with that, as far as it goes. But it does not go far enough.

I take no pleasure in concluding this. There is more to add; I shall stay my hand for now.

I think that’s a fair assessment, I view him like Andrew Brunette in a lot of ways. I think he can be successful at the NHL level but needs an already pre build roster that has good habits to make a meaningful push and even then it’s a toss up. In my perfect world Sweeney is gone and the new GM can decide if Monty is the guy.

What are Neely or anyone else with the Bruins doing to show they are not ok with it?

He did it in a smart way. He didn’t complain about the officiating. He complained about the NHL not making the supervisors available to the media for questions

Sinden would go after the games head official or Dir like Brian Lewis

anyone thinking they weren’t as mad as Schmautzy17 or Tom from Hyde Park is 100 % wrong

Sweeney doesn’t owe it to @sarge88 or Marc the butterball Bertrand an explanation

The refs are gutless and should get out of the profession if they can’t answer questions from a pool reporter after games for 5 minutes

Smart way to avoid fines & he said so at the end .That said though if I am Marchand and Pastrnak I definitely feel let down.He was going on about Coyle play and rightfully but the real issue is allowing your star players to get punched in the face and nobody and I mean nobody does anything from league to the management of Bruins to players .Bruins GM needs to fix the way he builds teams .

Yes let’s use a little common sense.

Florida is dominating us with puck possession. When do the vast majority of penalties happen? They happen to the defensive team in the defensive zone the vast majority of the time.

Offensive zone penalties are rare because the person possessing the puck is unlikely to commit a penalty.

When you are getting dominated 2:1 in puck possession and shots then it is likely penalties will reflect that as well.
You can use all the common sense and expected stats you’d like, but I have actually watched the series and I have seen the Panthers get away with a significant amount more penalties than the Bruins have through four games. If you don’t agree with that statement then this back and forth is useless.

I understand your perspective of more puck possession usually equals more power plays, but it’s not a guarantee (I mean you could even use examples of teams that are successful in the offensive zone by being really good at interference, hooking, holding, slashing, etc.), and it doesn’t explain it in this series when you have the second most penalized team in the league (who is still doing their same, if not more, clown shit as the regular season) getting half the penalties as the Bruins. Especially when you have tons of examples of game and series altering missed calls — from Bennet’s hit on Marchand, to the no GI goal, to smaller things like ketchup punching Swayman on his first shift of the game yet actually drawing a penalty.
This is when I really started questioning my NHL fandom, and dialed back my time spent watching considerably:

But this series vs Florida - specifically the Marchand non-call/subsequent review from Toronto and the allowed Bennett goal last night - has pushed me off the cliff. I no longer consider myself a fan of NHL hockey. I'll still watch the playoffs from time to time, but (as was the case this season) I will not be watching a second of the regular season moving forward. Horrific product.

Edit to add: the Tim Peel incident confirming what we all knew/know is what really solidifies it for me.

This really was the beginning of the end for me. I’ve said it multiple times on here but I don’t mind saying it every chance I get.

After Berube complained to the media/league about officiating at the halfway point in the series, the Blues received 50% less penalties for the remainder of the series.

If you think it was just a coincidence, literally the exact same thing I just described happened in both the Finals against the Bruins and Conference Finals against the Sharks.

Fun fact about those Blues is they were the second least penalized Stanley Cup champ (beaten only by the dominant short season Hawks team) as far back as nhl.com tracks those stats — which is like the 70s or something last time I checked. If you watched the Blues that year you would know how crazy that record is.

I’ve never said there’s some conspiracy on the league deciding who they want to win, but what I have always said is that NHL officials are the worst officials in all major sports. They are utterly and completely incompetent. They are also human and have conscious and subconscious biases towards certain players and maybe even teams. And the main point is that they are 110% very easily influenced, as shown back to back in 2019.

But real hockey fans don’t complain about officiating because that makes you a baby, and that’s why officiating has continued to get better and better year over year for a few decades… oh wait…

I would like your perspective on something since you usually have a differing view/opinion from mine but I am genuinely curious.

What’s the point of the mid series press conference by Sweeney. I think we can all agree it’s extremely uncharacteristic of a GM to have a middle of a series press conference to address the media/league/ref (whatever you want to call it).

Seems like something that is usually done in the end of the year press conference yet they did it before.

Wondering from your perspective on why since it is so incredibly rare.
2019 Craig Berube disagrees with you.

Have supervisors ever been questioned by media that doesn't have press credentials?

I have 0.0 why they were let down ?

Because they didn’t turn into a clown show for media & message boards.

people ast like Cam Neely was smiling all good

I bet Cam personally knows pasta & Marshy and they talk about this without sharing to Bruins2019Cup & Tony Mazz

I am bailing I’m embarrassed in a thread analyzing if Don & Cam don’t love the team or players because they didn’t scream we waz robbed we want justice

If/when they do lose they should immediately skate off the ice, eff the handshake line.......the panthers don't deserve that respect.

Why, because the B's don't have the testicles to defend themselves lmao.

No, because anyone who pulls the shit they do and then is rewarded/protected by the officiating/league doesn't deserve it. And that is exactly what they should say in postgame press conference when asked about it.

2019 Craig Berube disagrees with you.

Bruins are extremely undisciplined. They have more too many men on the ice penalties in the playoffs than every other team in the league combined.

They also have dumb penalties like geekie running into a goalie untouched.

A handful of interference calls from getting pinned in their own zone.

The bruins are hurting themselves far more than anything the refs are doing.

In my perfect world, which, alas and alack, does not exist, Neely, Sweeney and Montgomery would be a bad memory.

The former will eventually kick the latter to the curb. Yet, again, nothing will change as long as the seats are full and Bruins fans put up with absurd ticket prices, et. al.

It goes without saying that the old man in Buffalo has no place in my particular perfect world. No place in this one, either.

Watching Sweeney's presser, not as much as just reading the tweets.

The issue I have is what is Bettman doing to threaten teams from speaking out? If it's just a fine, then I think the Bruins should have still spoken up. What else could Bettman do?

What irked me more was Sweeney's comments about the Bruins not being a volume shooting team, and Maroon pretty much going against what his GM said saying they need to play better and get more pucks on net. For all the crap Maroon gets, he said the right things today. It remains to be seen if the Bruins can turn things around, but one things for certain, they are missing that killer instinct.

Side note: Felger, Mazz, and Beetle don't know anything about hockey and haven't said anything relevant since the whole deflate gate fiasco with the Patriots. That's when I stopped listening to them anyways.

Well at least we don't have any 1sts for them to steal. What's he gonna do steal our 7th in 2028? I'm shaking in my boots

We played Florida at the end of March. I was working, so listening on the radio. We were down 3-2 and there was a penalty called against the panthers. After coming back from commercial, the radio guys said during the entire break the Florida bench was screaming at the refs about the call. Well, 20 seconds into our PP they called Marchand for interference.

Later, I was able to see the plays. The penalty on Florida was absolutely a no doubt slash. Wasn't even in any way controversial. The penalty against Marchy? Nonsense. He kind of brushed someone and they called interference.

Pretty clear they made a "make up" call because Florida bitched.

Seen it way too many times. From the 19 SC final to the Panthers last year to the Leafs in round 1. Teams complain about the officiating and then calls go their way. While the Bruins seem to think they are taking some kind of high road by just sitting back and letting themselves get screwed and not say anything.

All of that can be true as well as the Bruins sucking and not deserving to win the series in addition to the Panthers not being called for at least half of what they should be.

Agreed. To be honest, even after all I wrote, I truly believe this tactic wouldn’t even work for the Bruins lol but at least f***ing say something.

That would be biggest shocker in years Eric but hope your right.

To bad Donny doesn’t have the Time infinity stone he could go back to Lucic incident night and make him drink water
Yea no kidding but 1 player is not enough you need throughout the lineup .Lucic would have dealt with it though
