"Draft and Develop" or "All In": What's next for the Jets?

What main direction should the Jets take now to get to the level of a true contender?

We aren't getting Jack and nor could we afford his cap hit and fill out our defense.

Optimal Roster for me next year that marries going for it with draft and develop:

We trade Copp and a pick to Minnesota for Dumba prior to the expansion draft.
We lose DeMelo to Seattle as they wont have much access to RD. We flip a mid pick to protect Stanley if need be
In FA we sign Oleksiak and Coleman as two big and physical players to fill a hole on the third line and second pairing LD
We integrate Perfetti on a soft minute scoring line if he is ready
Gus/Ves/Samberg break through in depth roles

Like all of this, except I'd have Heinola in over Samberg on his off side with Stanley. Although thinking about it, no way Maurice would play a rookie with Stanley... even more so on his off side haha. Guess that's why you label it "Optimal Roster".

Yeah I figured if there was one rookie Moe might make an exception for with Stanleybit would be the older defensive minded one that they did use on the right for the Moose this past year. I personally think Heinola's puck movingwould fit better but it's Moe we are talking about here.

What other Coleman type of UFA forwards are on your radar? Hyman, Armia come to mind.

I'd really prefer we dont lose DeMelo. But the rest looks good to me. Coleman might be tough to sign. He's playing himself into being wanted by almost everyone. Minny is gonna be a tough sell on Dumba too. Optimal roster for sure. Just gonna be tough as hell to pull off.

Some UFA forwards to consider...

Coleman
Hyman
Armia
Saad
Tatar
Wennberg
Schwartz
Danault (?)

I have a hard time not seeing Danault back with MTL and if he isn't then Seattle would likely be very interested in signing him and making him their pick.

If anyone hasn't heard Ken Wiebe on Winnipeg Sports Talk, I would highly recommend turning on that one. Hustler asked him all the right questions

Some things off the top of my head:

Copp is being protected no matter what, said to "write it in pen"

Jets love Stanley but would protect DeMelo with him being more difficult to replace and his playoff performance (mentions Oleksiak as potential UFA Stanley replacement). Mentions Seattle and their analytics army would love DeMelo. @Daximus bang on here.

Says Seattle may like Appleton over Stanley given their available options (mentions Armia as potential UFA Appleton replacement)

Says if he had to bet he thinks more likely we make a side deal in the end than not

Talks about how Dougie Hamilton would be a target but hinted at how he may make Pionk a bit redundant while is due for a raise

Thinks Gustafsson will almost surely win the 4C job next season (mentioned size, chemistry with Vesalainen, PK ability, ability to set up offense )

Thought that one of our three young LD could be moved for an established piece on the right side

Yeah pretty much how I'd approach the summer here.

Looks like they will have their pick of Apples and Stanley.

Yeah I've been saying all along DeMelo is a no brainer for them and that we are likely to make a side deal to protect what little depth we have then let it go and hope we can replace it in UFA. you have to wonder what established piece we can get if we dangle Heinola or Samberg. My guess is the Jets will dangle Heinola though.

If Moe doesn't see a spot for him then Chevy is likely forced to look at moving Ville for an upgrade at RD and the we go and integrate Samberg next year.

Well in a sense yeah but without Enstrom waiving we likely have to go 4 and 4. So we protect Scheif, Wheeler, Little, Lowry, Enstrom, Myers, Buff, Trouba.

Which leaves Copp, Armia and Perreault exposed. There was a pretty good chance we were losing one of Copp or Armia that year if we didn't ask Enstrom to waive.

Yeah I have a hard time seeing Minny turn down Heinola straight across for Dumba before the XD. But then we are likely losing DeMelo as a result. So in a weird way it's like moving Heinola and DeMelo for Dumba. If we make a major play after the XD after Minny has already traded or lost Dumba then it's hard to say what could even be out there if we dangle Heinola as a piece.

Maybe STL is okay with moving Parayko, maybe Dallas is okay with moving Klingberg. But both are UFA after next season.

If we do trade Heinola for Dumba then we almost certainly make a trade with Seattle to protect everyone.

I just can't see him being moved for a dmen that doesn't have term left. We would need to have agreements for extensions with any of the one year rental types.

I can't see us moving prior to the expansion draft either. It will be after imo.

Yeah seems likely but who is giving us a good established RHD with term for Heinola or any combo of Heinola and other futures? If you end up dealing Heinola and a 1st for a solid RHD then why not just trade Heinola for Dumba and use our 1st to protect our players in the expansion draft. Result is likely the same.

Yeah it essentially would cost us at least a 1st to keep on DeMelo at that point. Basically Dumba would cost us Heinola + 1st for us to add him and to keep our team together also

Still a cheap price to me for turning a weakness (RD) into a team strength. Others may disagree.

Listened to this too. Ken seems to be the most plugged-in guy in Jets media, so I put a lot of stock in what he said.

The "Wiebe" roster:

Connor-Scheifele-Wheeler
Ehlers-Dubois-Copp
Armia-Lowry-Appleton
Ves-Gus-Lewis (or 2021 equivalent)

Morrissey-DeMelo
Oleksiak-Pionk
Heinola-Poolman

I don’t hate it. I’d keep copp with Lowry and Appleton and bring in another winger. Should be lots of cap space. Maybe a Hyman or a granlund.
