Is he fully past those blood clot issues? I have no idea how much something like that impacts a career path.

Speaking from personal experience (but not as a pro athlete), it's the difference b/w being a functional human being with a FT job & no limitations in physical abilities vs. virtually anything else, depending on severity, location, # of clots etc.

Funny thing about those happenings around 2014 draft.

Jim Nill joined Stars management at April 2014. Their 2014 draft is the biggest failure in the last decade. All busts.

Red Wings former scouting director Joe McDonell joined Nill after 2014 june draft, at july 2014.

Wings brought in new scouting director Tyler Wright, operating already at 2014 draft. He had success picking Dylan Larkin, which Jim Nill somehow in a weird way missed, choosing midget defenceman Julius Honka. Honka busted after 89 NHL games, and no one else from 2014 draft hasn't played a game for Dallas Stars.

Wright also had average results at Detroit after 2014.

But when McDonell joined Nill at Dallas, their drafting has been getting better, especially at North America. Wyatt Johnstron, Mavrik Bourque, Logan Stankoven, all thriwing on their current minor careers. Finding Jason Robertson from 2nd round, their current best forward. Getting Heiskanen and Hintz, another 2nd rounder. Also Thomas Harley is ready, to take a bigger role after Klingberg left.

So the Directors changed, but they had former (good?) Dallas scouts, and got new results.

Red Wings drafting was very poor under Wright.

And it started getting better, when Yzerman changed 50% of the scouts and also the Scouting Director + chief scouts. Also started trusting Håkan with the highest pick, and all seem to be success stories.

So we maybe had good directors pre-2014, when Nill and McDonell were running it. We had better scouts, and results were good.

On Wright era, we had lost a lot of scouts, Yzerman took guys to Tampa, Nill took some guys to Dallas. That core was depleting year-by-year and Holland couldn't find new workforce. Only Yzerman was able to do it afterwards with his connections to everywhere.

Was Holland's North American scouting that bad?
By the decade

98 - Jiri Fisher - Good pick at 25. Barnes - bust at 55. No other top 2 round picks.
99 - No picks whatsoever until the 4th roudn.
00 - No North American picks until 130.
01 - No North American picks until 121.
02 - No North American picks until 156
03 - Howard @ 64 is a great pick. Quincey at 132 is a steal.
04 - No North American picks until 128.
05 - Kindl @ 19 - Meh. But the 2nd half of that first round was a minefield. Abdelkader @ 42 is good. Helm @ 132 is a steal.
06 - Emmerton @ 41 is a bust. Matthias @ 47 is a good pick.
07 - Smith @ 27 is a solid pick
08 - McCullum @ 30 is a total bust.
09 - Ferraro @ 32 was a bust. Nestrastil @ 75 was OK. Jensen @ 150 was solid.
10 - Sheahan @ 21 was OK. Mrazek @ 141 is a great pick.
11 - Jurco @ 35... 211 games? Still bustville. Ouellete @ 48 was OK. Sproul @ 55 is a bust. Quine at 85
12 - Frk @ 49 is towards bustville. Athanasiou is a steal @ 110.
13 - Mantha is a good pick @ 20. Nastasiuk busted @ 48. Bertuzzi is a great pick @ 58.
14 - Larkin was a steal @ 15. Only top 2 round pick from NA.
15 - Svech was a bust @ 19. Only top 2 round pick from NA.
16 - Cholowski was a bust 20. Smith looks like a bust @46. Hronek was a great pick @53.
17 - Rasmussen @ 9 is trending toward bustville. Only top 2 round pick from NA.
18 - Zadina @ 6 is trending toward bustville. Veleno @ 30 isn't quite so defined. McIsaac @ 36 hasn't done anything to suggest he'll be anything but a bust.
19- Mastrosimone @ 54 looks headed toward bustville.
20 - Hanas @ 55 was the only top 2 round North American. Seems like a bit of a longshot. There's some potential yet with Sebrango.
21 - Cossa @ 15 and Buium @ 36 are the top 2 round guys from NA. Mazur and Savage have shown potential.
22 - Dylan James is the only top 2 rounder @40.

So top 2 round picks from NA

Detroit's about 10-for-20 after Cholowski.

Recency bias though - since the Larkin pick -
Svechnikov, Cholowski, Rasmussen, Zadina -- it's hard not to feel that.

Sounds to me like Holland and co. were pretty good at drafting in the later rounds, but struggled in the 1st. Larkin and Mantha were great, but Kindl, Smith, Chowolski, maybe Zadina, maybe Veleno, Svech etc all seemed to be busts.
