It’s good to have yzermanAt 2014 NHL entry draft, Red Wings traded up at 3rd round to get Dominic Turgeon #63 overall.
At 2014 NHL entry draft, Tampa Bay traded up at 3rd round to get Brayden Point #79 overall.
Speaking from personal experience (but not as a pro athlete), it's the difference b/w being a functional human being with a FT job & no limitations in physical abilities vs. virtually anything else, depending on severity, location, # of clots etc.Is he fully past those blood clot issues? I have no idea how much something like that impacts a career path.

Our North American scouting under Holland was...not good. That’s disgusting
He's played 9 NHL games, so technically he did.I remember the Red Wings had Turgeon as a first round talent that year. Don't think he ever makes the dance, I'm afraid.
May be the understatement of the century right there. Our North American scouting under Holland was...not good.
31 pts in 65 games in the WHL.I remember the Red Wings had Turgeon as a first round talent that year. Don't think he ever makes the dance, I'm afraid.
Sounds to me like Holland and co. were pretty good at drafting in the later rounds, but struggled in the 1st. Larkin and Mantha were great, but Kindl, Smith, Chowolski, maybe Zadina, maybe Veleno, Svech etc all seemed to be busts. Was Holland's North American scouting that bad?
By the decade
98 - Jiri Fisher - Good pick at 25. Barnes - bust at 55. No other top 2 round picks.
99 - No picks whatsoever until the 4th roudn.
00 - No North American picks until 130.
01 - No North American picks until 121.
02 - No North American picks until 156
03 - Howard @ 64 is a great pick. Quincey at 132 is a steal.
04 - No North American picks until 128.
05 - Kindl @ 19 - Meh. But the 2nd half of that first round was a minefield. Abdelkader @ 42 is good. Helm @ 132 is a steal.
06 - Emmerton @ 41 is a bust. Matthias @ 47 is a good pick.
07 - Smith @ 27 is a solid pick
08 - McCullum @ 30 is a total bust.
09 - Ferraro @ 32 was a bust. Nestrastil @ 75 was OK. Jensen @ 150 was solid.
10 - Sheahan @ 21 was OK. Mrazek @ 141 is a great pick.
11 - Jurco @ 35... 211 games? Still bustville. Ouellete @ 48 was OK. Sproul @ 55 is a bust. Quine at 85
12 - Frk @ 49 is towards bustville. Athanasiou is a steal @ 110.
13 - Mantha is a good pick @ 20. Nastasiuk busted @ 48. Bertuzzi is a great pick @ 58.
14 - Larkin was a steal @ 15. Only top 2 round pick from NA.
15 - Svech was a bust @ 19. Only top 2 round pick from NA.
16 - Cholowski was a bust 20. Smith looks like a bust @46. Hronek was a great pick @53.
17 - Rasmussen @ 9 is trending toward bustville. Only top 2 round pick from NA.
18 - Zadina @ 6 is trending toward bustville. Veleno @ 30 isn't quite so defined. McIsaac @ 36 hasn't done anything to suggest he'll be anything but a bust.
19- Mastrosimone @ 54 looks headed toward bustville.
20 - Hanas @ 55 was the only top 2 round North American. Seems like a bit of a longshot. There's some potential yet with Sebrango.
21 - Cossa @ 15 and Buium @ 36 are the top 2 round guys from NA. Mazur and Savage have shown potential.
22 - Dylan James is the only top 2 rounder @40.
So top 2 round picks from NA
Detroit's about 10-for-20 after Cholowski.
Recency bias though - since the Larkin pick -
Svechnikov, Cholowski, Rasmussen, Zadina -- it's hard not to feel that.
