Does Ovechkin hit 50 goals in 21/22?

I’m rooting like hell for him to catch 99 (never thought we’d see that) in terms of goal scoring, but 50 goals/season is a very tall demand for however much longer he is in the league.

Last 3 full seasons he went 49, 51 and 48 (in 68 GP so 58 goal pace). Even last year he was on pace for 44 goals, despite being on covid protocol, a compressed schedule, new coach with no training camp, etc. League scoring is going up. If anyone deserves the benefit of the doubt, it's him

No. I love OV but time catches up to everyone. Ov may have a few more 30 goal seasons but I think the 50+ seasons are over with.

I would love if he prove me wrong though.

99% of the time I would say of course this 36 year old won’t hit 50 goals. But Ovi has earned the benefit of the doubt and until he doesn’t I believe he will always have a shot at 50.

This is going to be pretty lopsided

When I see the word pace...cringe...not a real number

I don't think he does but it should surprise absolutely no one if he did.

Except that he is 36 going into next season and 50 goals for anyone is really hard these days, alot of things have to go right.

Yes. But going into those seasons he was 32-34, 50 goals were really hard, a lot had to go right, he was aging and wasn't supposed to hit those numbers, no one ever did, etc. But he still produced and won 3 rockets. Maybe it's just time to accept that OV is a freak and a "normal" aging curve doesn't apply to him (not directed at you specifically, just saying in general)?

Fair enough, if anyone can pull it off it would be Ovi.

The thing is Ovechkin is moving into territory were nobody has scored 50 goals in the NHL. The oldest to score 50 was John Bucyk, who scored 51 at 35. Selanne holds the record for 36 year old and older with 48 goals and Gordie Howe had 44 goals when he was 40. 49 goals by Ovechkin would be a NHL record. So Ovechkin would have to bee better than any single player has ever been in order to score 50 at 36. Now on the other hand I agree with you that Ovechkin isn't normal and that he's in a great situation to do it. Ovi also benefits massively from NHL becomming more and more like a soft beta male league, which will give him 10+ more goals than he would've scored back in the dead puck era...

When someone is close to a milestone like this, teammates are well aware and do whatever they can to help them achieve said milestone.
With Ovi and Washington having their cup; getting Ovechkin to 900 goals is their next stanley cup.
Won’t surprise me at all to see Ovi hit 60 this season and to have the highest shots he has ever had in a season.

Absolutely

He led the league in scoring for 3 consecutive seasons while entering his mid 30s and was just a few goals away from 3 consecutive 50 goal seasons
