Does Frédérik Gauthier seem like a Babcock kind of player?

I know Babcock is a teacher.

Does Freddy have the tools and skills that Babcock likes? Does his two-way game appeal to Mike?

Trying to think of a player of his stature that Mike had but cannot think of any.

Hopefully he can make the Leafs this year and be the best two way forward the NHL has seen in a while.

He needs more time to develop. He struggled a bit in the AHL last year. I think he will be a 4th liner who can PK eventually but that's at least one or two more seasons down the road.

Still needs more time eh?

Agreed he will be a good 4th liner, but his biggest skill will be the PK as you mentioned and two way game.

I just hope we don't get impatient with him and give up on him.

I can really see him being an important part of an NHL team in his future.

He's big, good at faceoffs, a solid penalty killer, is good along the boards and is strong on the puck. Seems like a Babcock kind of guy.

He has limited upside, but there is a definitely a spot for him on this team in the future.

2 way game ?

this implies he can produce offensively , unfortunately i don't see him generating many points at the NHL level

if he can carve out a pro career it'll most likely be on the 4th line getting 8-10 mins a game

I watched 40-50 marlies games last year and yes he struggled at times. Looked slow with his edge work and confused at times. But, he improved throughout the year and should continue to do so next year. Believe it or not he had a descent amount of PP time and still onky had 18pts I think? The offence will never be his strength but if he stays in the A for a other year or two he should improve slightly in that area.

He might not have many finishing abilities but hes a decent playmaker. He also has some good speed for a giant.

A 20 point 6'5 PK specialist on the 4th line is pretty good.

He's no lock for the NHL still.

Will need more time in the minors, if he does develop he'll be a 4th liner in 5c5 specialists and hopefully a PK specialist if all things go well for him.

Gauthier is waiver eligible until 18/19, I think by then he will have been moulded into a great two-way bottom six player.

Could be great on a line with Matt Martin and whomever else we get that can play a high-level defensive game.

He liked him in his stint last year from the sound of things.

He's an effective player. Still some developing to do though but should become that Helm/Maltby/Draper type player for us maybe.

Who knows what happens with a couple of years of development? But in the AHL playoffs where his supposed game should excel he was a repeated healthy scratch. This current regime is no-nonsense and decisive. I doubt he remains for the balance of his ELC.

There will be some Marlies grads next year so he should get more of a look in the top 6/9, but I'm still 50/50 on whether he becomes a regular NHLer.

Another head scratcher from Nonis, probably had Bruins on the brain and wanted brawn vs skill/talent in the draft in '13.

Marlies played two physical series in the playoffs last year and the team got beat up and pushed around. Gauthier was scratched in favor of Colin Smith. That should tell you everything you need to know.

Agreed Babcock type player, but seeing he was a healthy scratch off and on for the Marlies in the playoffs looks like he is trying to master the AHL and still a ways from the NHL.

1 more year and he will take Bozak's center spot.

Matthews
Nylander
Kadri
Gauthier

I think based on ice time you'll see this instead:
Matthews
Kadri
Nylander
Gauthier

Although really I think Nylander is just going to end up staying on the wing.

If anything they'd probably re-sign Bozak at $2.25M for a couple more years.

Lacks the skill to play higher then 4th line and by the time he will be able to play 4th line minutes we will have more talented kids on ELC's pushing him out.

He's a 1 way player and that 1 way happens to be defense. Very little offensive upside to speak of as a pro.

If he was drafted 10 spots later nobody would even care about him as a prospect. 1st rounder label carries people farther then it should sometimes.

I doubt he's anything more than at best a 4C putting up ~25 points.

Don't expect a lot from this guy, as he is only going to be a checking "C" (you don't draft checkers in 1st round) - another blunder by previous regime(s)

It depends how we finish building the team. We have a lot of skilled wingers.
A 4th line of Gauthier with a Soshnikov/Timashov/Johnson talent might compliment well. Not just a Gauthier Colton Orr line.

Well, you might need to ask the question:

When Babs was on DET did he play 4th liners who could score and play good D?
