Speculation: Do we go after Ristolainen?

He's supremely overrated.

I actually think he's become underrated now, due to getting buried under insane minutes and compeition on an awful team with no PMD. He's actually a victim of bad advanced stats application - adjusted for usage he's actually the best possession dman on the sabres despite playing the biggest and toughest minutes.

I think he'd be a perfect complement to the Leafs' dcorps and might be an excellent buy low opportunity.

What makes you think the Sabres would “sell low” on him?

He may be on the market but I’d imagine they’d want a good return for a younger D man.

Ristolainen is a very gifted but flawed young player who is put in a rather impossible situation. If it turns out that Buffalo stares themselves blind on the results, rather than the tool itself, then I'd be all for trying to acquire him. Put him with someone who can really move the puck, like Rielly, and I bet you have a player that can live up to the hype that Ristolainen had a year ago.

lol guys seriously? we are going to have to give up one of Marner or Nylander to get Risto. No different then the Jones for Johansen trade

Everyone with the exception of Eichel may be available, but considering Risto's age, talent, and current contract status, the potential asking price would likely render him untouchable. Adding a divisional tax would make this deal impossible from the Leafs standpoint.

Probably, and I'm higher on Risto than most, but I don't think he's a Jones caliber player- even at the equivalent stage of that trade (though admittedly, I was higher on Jones than most- I thought he was going to be the #1 in his D-1 for a good while).... nor is he really all that close to Rielly anymore, since he's really emerged and blossomed this year.

He's basically similar to a Dougie Hamilton, Parayko (except Parayko is severely overhyped here for some reason)....except on a far worst team, with tougher usage. He's going to have his brain farts here, or where-ever he plays inevitably. It's more about hoping he puts it all together, similar to Rielly this year, and stabalizes because his absolute ceiling is quite high.

I'd definitely give up a quantity package....Gardiner + 1st + any prospect in our system but that's probably as high as I'd go.

I'd actually rather target Reinhart and Scandella over Risto. If we are going for a Risto, might as well aim higher.

I have a soft spot for Reinhart, and while he likely won't live up to 2nd overall, I think he still becomes a useful player.

1. Risto is a PP specialist who doesn't play to his size enough.
2. A divisional rival like Buffalo would want a huge price, like Willy or Mitch.

The D I want from the Sabres is Jake McCabe; at 24 he's still young, he plays physical and has shown some offensive upside and I think getting him would allow us to (eventually this year) move Jake for a return of likely a low 1st+.

Leivo, 2018 2nd (whichever is lower, likely ours) and Dzierkals for McCabe.

Gardiner at TDL to Los Angeles for 2019 1st and Zach Leslie.

Rielly Hainsey
McCabe Zaitsev
Borgman Carrick

The last thing we want is to send Willie or Mitch to Buffalo and have them haunt us for the next 10 years. Ain't happening.

Wouldn’t mind moving some forward prospects and picks to get a deal done. Not much more though.

Maybe a 1st + Kapanen + one of our other young Marlies.

Girgensons could be a solid 3C type I've been asking for. He's got size, D and some physical play. Either paired with Marner or handling matchup duty freeing Kadri. Not going to cost the big guys, allows us to move Bozak.

Or Kadri is your 3rd. So you pay your 3rd C 4.5/ Problem solved

Kadri > ROR

Not interested in that overpaid loser
I'm not even mentioning the fact that we'd have to give up some quality assets for him
If we're targeting a center, I'd rather pay a bit more for Taveres than overpaid ROR + we wouldn't have to give up any assets for him
