Watching hockey for many years, you always hear about players playing through really tough injuries. Some players will block a puck with their face and be back the next game. Some players play through broken bones.

Is this some new age thing where players don't push through injuries? Why is Nylander not playing?

We keep hearing that he is a game time decision, so obviously the injury can't be that bad. Is Nylander just being soft or what is going on?

Do we even know what his injury is? Hard to say he should play through it if we don't even know what it is.

What if it's concussion-like symptoms where they have to literally take it hour by hour to see if he's showing any symptoms near game time? Or a tweaked groin where they have to see how he handles the pre-game stretching and loosening up before making a call on whether he can go?

Plenty of players play through injury each and every year (and you know this since you watch hockey). This is a bad attempt to troll.

Matthew Tkachuk played through serious injury just last year's SCFs and was more or less a non-factor.

Patrice Bergeron came back from serious injury also last year's playoffs, with his team up 3 games to 1, he was garbage as they lost three straight.

If Nylander is so compromised by his injury he can't be his dynamic self, what exactly does he bring of value to the Leafs line-up?

Sakic missed games, and was mostly underwhelming in those he played, in the LAK second round series in 2001 when Colorado won the Cup. Players missed games in the past as well.

Yes Nylander is soft, like really soft!

People need to remember that this is William Nylander:

Does that seem like a guy that shows up for the playoffs?!

Now back in the days the Leafs had Swedes like this that the rest of us Swedes could be proud of:

He's probably out for the series, coaches do this crap all the time. Keep saying so and so is a game time decision to keep their opponent on their toes but they know damn well they aren't playing

A lot of the times when players are "playing through" a serious injury it's more like they are showing up but not doing much "playing". Like yeah, I get it, you want to be playing the most important games of the year and in your head you probably think you can help despite being a shadow of yourself. Sometimes I've wondered why the coaches don't flat out tell these guys their play is crap and the team has a better chance to win with a replacement level guy who's actually healthy enough to play hockey.

Who knows about Nylander? Probably no one here and if they did, they're probably in a position to not say anything anyway.

I hope so. NHL needs to seriously update their policies regarding injury handling. Just about ALWAYS players return too early, play injured, and ruin their long-term health, their team's long-term success, and their own happiness.

In hockey, there's this toxic culture that it's "cool" or "tough" to play injured and sacrifice yourself for the team. That's such a short-sighted way of thinking. If the teams aren't able to be responsible on their own, there needs to be an external body that forbids players from playing injured.

All of that plus, from the player's perspective (depending on their own mindset...), if playing hurt damages something badly & you don't 'ever' come fully back, that's likely to shorten your career by a year or two. The non star players are probably the most likely to play through injury as they have to constantly show why they should be in the league, so it's more the star/higher paid players who know their job is secure even if they don't 'give it their all'. So potentially, losing 2-3 years off your career could cost them $10+ million.

It's hard to blame them for not sacrificing their bodies when that's factored in.

they do, but for him to be out and demko and pesce it must be serious they are advised to sit out or, if injured again it can be serious consequences.

With the increased sports betting I have to think the NHL is going to be forced to disclose the exact injuries much like the NFL does and basically NBA/MLB. Its only a matter of time

If it was a concussion would he even be able to be skating at practice? I also think he's been participating to a degree that usually players coming off a concussion do not do. I also think that Wischusen said they had an entire crew at ESPN re-watch the 82nd game and were fairly confident if he did have an injury it was not concussion related.
