Did the NHL have a 90-man Protected Player List and 50 contract limit in the 1970’s like they do now?

Very interested in old time hockey (60’s/70’s)

Did the NHL teams have the same type of limits they have now? Like only 50 contracts allowed to be signed or the 90 player list teams are allowed to have??

Or was it just a free for all and teams held any amount of players?

I dont recall but all leagues have roster rules evrn back then. 50 sounds about right when teams also have AHL development teams.

The 90 player cap might have existed or some variation of ot thst counts drafted player rights but it was likely higher.

Back then you had many more rounds for drafting and teams had pkayer rights for longer periods like if the drafted players from europe. Where tea m.j s held them forever. A team could easily draft 15 players a year with many playing in europe/ Soviet union who they had forever rights which easily can build up to 40 over 25 yests if drafting

Here's a player that came over ten years after being drafted. Granted, his tenure didn't last long. Father of Sabres prospect btw.
