It's clear: The first half of the season was bad. With only tinkering at the December Trade Freeze, no major moves were made. January 5th is the date when Malkin and Hagelin started playing consistently with each other. They've played together at 5v5 ever since. Since January 5th, the Penguins are 19-7-1. Before January 5th, the Penguins were 20-19-3.

Obviously, other players impacted the team, but I don't think any player(s) have had as much impact as the Malkin/Hagelin combo did.
