Did The Leafs Mismanage Gardiner/Franson This Summer?

Too bad there was not a poll attached to this thread. I do recall when the Leafs signed Gardiner to a long term contract. There were hundreds of like the moves, and about 20 that did not like it on a poll I created. For obvious reasons we have seen this year. Questionable hockey sense that is Gardiner. Siegal was correct, abeit late on this. Leafs misread Franson all along.

Did the Leafs "mis-read" Franson though?

He's going to sign a huge deal in the summer, and maybe he lives upto it.

Or maybe he doesn't.

If he doesn't, did the Leafs really misread him? Or did they realize that they had an asset on their hands that wasn't worth the money & instead to squeezing another hefty, poor valued contract, they let him go?

Point is - if Franson struggles on a big deal with expectations moving forward, then I'm not sure you can criticize the Leafs for how they handled an asset they didn't believe in
