Hi, everybody, I'm back from the game, and thought I'd share a few thoughts from my live experience:
1) The Devils struggled with zone entries all night. The Caps were very effective at negating the Devils' speed and passing by clogging up the neutral zone. The Devils are going to have to figure out ways of getting around such tactics in the future.
2) Devils took too many stupid or sloppy penalties like catching the puck and high-sticking. Those are the lapses that can kill you against the Caps in particular with their lethal snipers.
3) Devils didn't create too many opportunities on their own power play chances. Again, entering the offensive zone was a major challenge even with the man advantage.
4) I liked what I saw from Bratt. His hockey IQ and skill were on display. I just wish he had a bit more size. There were times that he was easily knocked off the puck, and since he is so tiny, you do wonder how his body will withstand a full NHL season. Still, he is obviously smart and talented. Highway robbery to get a player who looks like he can contribute the way Bratt does with a sixth round pick.
5) Nice to see Palms and Hall light the lamp. The arena got pumped for each of their goals.
6) Okay, to talk about the elephant in the room that I literally had to fight to keep my eyes off at times, the new Jumbotron in my opinion is too big. The new screens are very high quality, but I can't help wishing they kept the old size and put in the new screens. All the white on the new screens creates a luminescence that kind of hurt my eyes, and the sheer size of it was distracting. I would be reluctant to buy tickets in the upper bowl, personally, since I would feel like I was paying forty plus dollars to watch a game on the screen at the arena when I could stay home and not wait on line for the bathroom. I used to tell people that there were no truly bad seats in the Prudential Center, but with the new Jumbotron, I would hesitate to recommend the upper bowl seating, as I think the screens would interfere with viewing the rink. All of this is my personal perspective, of course, and I'm sure some will love the scale of the new Jumbotron, but I wanted to warn others that it might be too large for them, as it was for me. I find it overwhelming and not in a good way.
Anyway, fun night even if the arena wasn't packed. Wish I could've seen a win though
