The new-look New Jersey Devils opening game was an emphatic success, as they dominated the Toronto Maple Leafs en route to a 6-1 win. Ilya Kovalchuck, the Devils biggest offseason prize, led the way with 2 goals, while fellow new addition Joe Nieuwendyk added a goal and an assist. Holdovers Jason Blake, Marion Gaborik, and Murray Baron also scored. Kevin Weekes looked sharp in goal, turning away 16 of 17 to earn the win.
The Maple Leafs are not expected to be a contender this year with one of the lowest payrolls in the league, but it was still a nice way to begin the season, especially after the longest offseaso in league history. Things will get tougher in a hurry for the Devils, as they will come home to host the Atlanta Thrashers before hitting the road for a major test against the defending Stanley Cup Champion Ottawa Senators.
