What level do you think the team has been at in their last 8 games?

In that stretch, they had a dud vs. Tampa in game 1. They outplayed Tampa in game 2 and lost in a shootout. They didn’t play well in Florida then had their best game against Tampa in a win. They thoroughly outplayed Minnesota, got goalie’d and lost in the final seconds of 3 on 3. Buffalo was a stinker defensively and in goal. They won vs. Ottawa, and they were in this one against the Islanders but couldn’t solve the current best goaltender in the league.

I feel that this shows inconsistencies that meet the roughly .500 record they have been at in March where they’ve also come out on the unfortunate end with some of the goaltending they’ve run into recently (Vasilevskiy, Gustavsson and Sorokin). There are always things to be worked on, but I don’t think this stretch is as ugly as people seem to think it is purely just looking at the results. I’m fairly confident that we’ll benefit from more rest coming up and having a consistent lineup going forward.
I agree with this general point. The Florida game was a stinker and last night had some long periods where the Devils stunk, but overall the Devils are still playing well over the last few weeks.

The worst part of this board is the post policing.

Number one, you’re not wrong and Meier has been underwhelming. And the way people pounce to tone police how people say things is annoying to all hell. Saying something or someone hasn’t played great doesn’t mean you’re hysterical and doomsaying.

That’s the end of my rant, but suffice to say I want more from Meier too and I hope when the chips are down we see more of the physicality and board play game he can clearly play.

This is how I feel about Palat except he added a shitty turnover to it last night. Would like to see him getting it going a bit before the playoffs cause I'm not entirely convinced he's just gonna explode just gonna cause it's playoff time.

I don't know how true that is. It's not like most of these teams have been able to shut down scoring chances and dictate play. The Devils control play against most of these teams, but lose the goaltending battle. They had the better share of expected goals against the Islanders, but Sorokin was the difference. They had the better share of chances in the Lightning series, but Vasilevski was the difference.

My concern with the Rangers is that the Devils will control play, but Shesterkin has the ability to do exactly what Sorokin and Vasilevski did.
The islanders and a couple other teams build their entire game plan and roster around doing what the Islanders do. They play a very low event game and rely on their defence and goaltending while they sit back and wait for opportunistic scoring. They funnel everything to the outside and collapse around their net and sacrifice any sort of rush / quick transition game for a slow , heavy , grind the other team down until they can beat in a rebound / deflection goal. They count on teams to get frustrated and make mistakes by trying to press for a goal.
It seems like teams do this when they are out skilled and not as fast as the other team. Clog up the neutral zone , push everything to the outside and stack in front of their own net . Its frustrating to watch playing against those teams. We ”deserve” to win and outplay them but they get elite goaltending or don’t give up many grade A chances as it’s mostly shots from the outside or shots are blocked .

Was at the game last night. UBS is a gorgeous arena and I’d highly recommend catching an away game there. Devils fans were well represented. Saw lots of red jerseys in the stands and on the concourse. .

Wish the team had given more to cheer for. The Defense was atrocious.

That issue of post policing is really just a collage of know-it-all whataboutism's

It changes year to year too; this year, any down games or stretches are discounted and cast aside simply because we sucked last year.

Its no coincidence that the same groupthink pronouncing any and all criticisms as exaggerative are the ones who most favor advanced analytics - which is the comical part

theyll get on your ass about questioning Meier or a 3-6 stretch - then turn right around and parrot how well the team played in a 5-1 loss

Hockey is wild, with the most random variance and luck factors of any sport - but the way some post around here youd think its Chess where a computer is the best player in the world

I can see the posts now after he has one assist in six games against Shesterkin excusing it because his expected goals in the series was like three or whatever. It’ll be lit here if we lose a playoff series with better metrics in general.

Weird how you’re aware of board dynamics of years past with an account created March 1, 2023.

The fact is people do try to police tone here and it does get annoying. Just because some people do fit the meme of only posting negativity then as a result every single negative post gets lumped in and dismissed as just more doomer crap no matter who it’s from or when it happens. People are entitled to be negative just as they’re entitled to cite the xG as proof the team is still playing well. Complaining about the complainers gets annoying too.

It depends on the poster, if it's someone who's doing it consistently, it's more prone to be called out. Also I mean it's fine to be angry about a game but then perspective where this team has been the last few years makes someone like me even like this season even more. I'm not saying not to have heightened expectations but this is still one of the better Devils teams we've seen in the past two decades and for some people it's their first really good Devils team since 2018 wasn't a good team but a team carried by an MVP + few good pieces thus people more clingy with this team. It's also a message board so natural disagreements will happen.

Oh no! I can’t believe we lost! I am so sad!
Yup

Sure you are

Just like you couldn't believe when ''we'' (the Rangers) ''Lost da game'' exactly one week ago.

What was that? An accidental drive-by drunk post?

I'm not one to get into the brawling with other posters here or looking to E-fire shots, but this poster is highly suspect. From Luukkonen is really good to the bouncing around from local team to team.

Can't tell if an Islanders fan (definitely USED TO BE from what it appears, at least as of last season), Rangers fan or Devils fan.

For what it's worth, I think that was the only post on the Rangers forum. At least recently.....

Unfortunately, it’s the nature of facing teams with the best goalies. They can steal games and series all on their own.

Sorokin is going to drag that Islander team way further than they probably deserve. He’s a hell of a talent.
It's takes an elite scorer like Haula to beat Sorokin!:sarcasm:

This board scares me sometimes.

We lost to a RIVAL (always can be a tossup - no matter records), who is a solid team with a top 5 goalie.... and is fighting to make the playoffs. These things will happen.
I'd be more worried if we were losing to teams that just plain suck or aren't playing for anything during this stretch. We've lost to good teams and desperate teams. It happens. And yeah I know we're going to play good teams in the playoffs so people are worried that we'll keep losing to good teams, but we've been through this once already this season and the team pulled out of it. The playoffs don't start tomorrow. They've got time yet to work the through their issues.

I didn’t know disagreeing with “Timo sucks, bad trade”, pointing out how his point production doesn’t tell you everything, is tone policing and “group think”.

I know some people thrill at the idea of taking on the whole mean board but it really is just a bunch of individual posters. It’s less nuanced when you don’t particularly pay attention to what people are saying (as opposed to claiming a united faction says the team played great in lop-sided losses so you can feel superior).

But the phenomenon people are complaining about is people get testy after losses and sometimes they don’t have patience for cartoonishly negative venting. Should those people let other people vent? Probably? If it would stop people from complaining about the meanie pants complaining about their original complaining…

Its the fine line between thinking Meier hasnt produced and that meaning he sucks. Now I specifically didnt say this nor think it and I havent gone and checked each individual post regarding this; but from ... I forget the game but we got tossed, think it was the second Tampa game, and some people (who some were posters I know to be both ways throughout the year, usually fair) were questioning how we'd look in the playoffs because of the tighter game and how we lost those two games

Theres plenty of reasons why two games isnt nearly enough but theres also plenty of reasons why those games are seen as 'playoff tests' as well.

And that specific instance is when I originally chimed in on the idea that some posters feel the need to remind everyone how to feel. Its fine to think we shouldnt worry and to even go as far as to debate it; but a lot of those debates are heated and involve softball insults tat just arent necessary if they arent a doomsdayer

And yes, March 1st signup I know - but we all know who the doomsday-posters are so idk why some feel the need to go at those who arent that but are feeling negatively about that particular game or stretch of games

Its just how people word their arguments - not that the arguments are being had

What's funny about this, is this is itself a cartoonish take on a much more grounded take than you're making it out to be. At literally no point did anyone say "Timo sucks, bad trade", but instead expressed the eminently reasonable opinion that the eye-test on Timo's play doesn't match the xG or whatever metric getting pushed. But of course, anything that doesn't perfectly align with the chart-of-the-day gets translated into the most inflammatory take, i.e., "Timo sucks, bad trade", and the claws come out.

I thought Timo was "fine" last night. I'm expecting more regardless of his xG chain, etc.

I wish I had screencapped a pretty glaring moment when Timo was open in the slot with his stick ready to shoot and Jack skated the puck into the crease himself and put the puck into Sorokin's chest. I want Timo with Nico until Jack stops doing that. Could just be my own confirmation bias but I feel like I've been seeing a lot of that lately.

Was just saying in the team thread but Jack and Meier should run their own lines. Both are high volume shooters who hound possession time. They can work with each other but i dont see why youd do that if your goal is to capitalize on puck possession in todays game

Either Timo with Nico or Timo with Bratt without Jack on the line considering that Bratt likes to pass the puck more than shoot the damn thing.
