I view all of the "invites" as a wake up call to everyone that no one is safe & there play during camp should not be complacent.

One would venture to guess that Clowe "might" be done at this point, despite what anyone says. IR for him & Salvador before the season starts.

I see a lot of Two-Way contracts being signed late this month. Coupled with a package-deal trade.

The preseason couldn't start soon enough. Interesting times we're seeing over in Devils land.

Start the wagering too...

Janssen goes buck wild on TooToo in camp. Cam is not about to let TooToo walk in & take an enforcer-on-call spot away from him without a fight. (Pun intended)

And I remember I how I was complaining that the Devils Forward "cupboard" was bare.

Now Lou is trying to OVER-compensate for that.

Never in moderation, huh lou?

Why can't we invite good players to camp? I much rather have Joni Pitkänen over Kaberle and Alfie over the several corpse hacks that we invited. I don't know about any of you but I rather at least have a try out then no contract at all. The point should be to ice the best potential team as possible. These try outs lead to potential ACTUAL contracts. Get the best players you can get. Not ****ing Tootoo and Gomez.

I honestly can't figure out why anyone has an issue with camp invites?

Maybe cause there isn't much to talk about? I don't know but these things seem largely a non issue to me.

My fear is someone has a great camp, makes the team, then reverts to their mediocrity within 5 games. Meanwhile guys like Gelinas or Josefson are put on the backburner in favor of guys who had a fluke camp.

Gelinas is putting himself on the backburner by the day :P

I don't get this assumption that people have where every tryout's automatically going to get a contract. We had Matthieu Darche, Anton Stralman and Marcus Nilsson come in for tryouts in recent years, and none of them got signed to a contract. Fedor Federov too way back when. Bernier got signed to an AHL contract before he made the team later in the season. If we didn't have fourteen forwards signed to one-way deals already (with none waiver-exempt) maybe I'd think a couple of these guys will be signed but it isn't that easy. Players have to be moved first. Every year it seems like we're 'waiting to move guys' in camp and never do.

Tootoo at best I could see him getting an AHL contract, since Cam's largely abdicated the 'enforcer' role.

This is the time for Josefson, Matteau, Boucher, Severson, etc. to make some veterans look bad.

That is why these vets are here.

Because when the new owners came along we were hoping Lou would spend money on high end talent. Gomez, Kaberle, Tootoo, Cheechoo, Carter, the 31 year old Russian D and possibly Handzus and Halpern (rumors) is just a continuation or Lou's bargain bin shopping which has not worked.

Instead of Kaberle and Tootoo, how about Pitkanen and Alfredsson? Huge upgrades. If they work out you trade Ryder.

Seriously? Allfie wants to sign again in Detroit and the only reason he hasn't is because his back is shot. That is why he is still unsigned. If it improves he will be a red wing again.

Pitkanen? He still can't even skate. His foot is a disaster. He doesn't even think he will play again this year anywhere. This is our top end talent that you are mad Lou for not signing?

He went out and spent money to get is a very good RW and resigned vital pieces in Cory and Greene.

Kaberle is here because of the Gely hold out and to bring some extra competition so the kids don't get complacent. The preference would be Gely to sign and take that spot or for Serverson, Scarlett, hege to step up

The forwards are warm bodies. We have an older roster so I doubt they won't to go crazy with them in pre season games and in certain cases (Clowe) they will want to be eased back into hockey.

The only tryouts that have legit shots of being signed is Gomez if he runs with his chance and Carter. Other guys are fodder that will either go to Albany, sign somewhere else or sign no where.

Here's a loosely put together lineup:

Cammaller-Zajac-Jagr
Henrique-Elias-Havlat
Clowe-Ruutu-Brunner
Zubrus-Gionta-Ryder

Bernier, Josefson

Greene-Larsson
Gelinas-Zidlicky
Salvador-Merrill

Harrold

Schneider
Clemmensen

These are all players signed to one way contracts. That's a 23 man roster of one way deals.

So tell me where Gomez, Kaberle, Carter, Tootoo, Fedotenko, Cheechoo, Mamashev, and possibly Halpern/Handzus fit?

It's just crazy to see this. I would rather see Matteau, Boucher, Severson, and Helgeson fully compete for spots.

I wrote this in the other thread too, but..
The young guys are all going to get a chance to play throughout camp & preseason its our older vets, the ones that are signed, that won't be seeing too much playing time.

You need to ice a certain percentage of veterans in preseason games.
We have a lot of veterans who probably shouldn't be playing the extra games.

Old guys get a rest. Team ices a compliant lineup for 6 games.
And the invites get a stage to prove what they've got left, better than they have at any other camp.

There's reason to benefit for all parties involved without impacting any of what will be iced on opening night this season.

Tootoo is a no talent cheap shot artist. If Albany wants him, fine. He's got no value in the NHL.

What a clown statement. Tootoo is one of the most honest, hardworking players in the league who certainly deserves a shot in the NHL after all the things he's dealt with. He's a hard-nosed forward capable of chipping in some offense.
