He seems exhausted with all of the losing, which I don't blame him for. He wasted like 70% of his prime on a dumpster fire team already. I think he probably will test the market as well, which puts the Devils in a tough spot. You should be able to get a really nice return for him, but then you're opening up a significant hole that will set the team back next year.

Under no circumstances should we try and resign Severson. We need guys who can clear the crease, which is one of his major flaws, and can defend properly in our own zone. If we’re going to roll with Hamilton, Severson, Smith and eventually Hughes and possibly Shak, that’s a pretty horrible cast of defenders to have in our own zone right there.

We should be packaging Severson with picks/prospects to get a legit top #6 winger, not handicap our defence by handing him a 6 year deal.

I voted Nico, Jack, and Other (mainly 'cause I want to also pick, Siegenthaler for his steady "D", Sevs for the Goal and Mercer for the pass to him that led to that goal).

On the flip side, Bratt had a pretty quiet game.

Someone said he didn't look too engaged.

I don't know if it was anything the Caps were doing or if it was just him not "in the zone".

Whatever, though.

Good thing we have JACK F'N HUGHES, Beeyotches!!

That was great.

Only thing i was surpised is Nas had hughes take 2 ozone draws in OT (i think he lost both). Odd considering Nico and others were available. Seemed a little suspect since posession is so key.

At least blackwood made a save in ot

Yeah that was a head-scratcher.

Normally we would've used McLeod for the faceoff win, then quickly get him off and bring Bratt in.

100% agree. I brought it up in the general team thread but it will be a very interesting situation to see what happens when his contract ends. Would love to have him back at a reasonable price but it's also likely he may want to test the market. And if he does, I feel he's already gone because some team will probably pay him handsomely.

To me, our right side of our defense is probably our biggest weakness in our pipeline. I wouldn't be upset in having Dougie and Sevy manning the top 4 RD spots for several more years.

Case McCarthy has been one of the best RD in the NCAA this season. That should make you feel a bit better. He's certainly not a future top-pairing guy, but I could see him being a Siegenthaler-type for the bottom 4 down the road.

In a vacuum I think everyone would want Sevs back. Obviously he may not want to come back and giving him a big contract could make things tight in the future since the cap is not projected to rise more than $1 mil per season for a while. Most good teams are in the $26-28 mil cap space area for defense. Examples, TBL $25.2, Avs 26.6, and Blues 25.5. If Sevs wants say $7, than you have $16 tied up with him and Dougie. Devils would have to be right about their young players being able to play on ELCs since they will have little wiggle room.

I agree with you both for sure and that's why I'm intrigued by what the team will do. In my eyes, I think the most likely situation is Sevy tests the market, whether it's his choice or ours based on his wants.

To @StevenToddIves I think we've all tried to keep close tabs on McCarthy as you were a big fan of his in his draft year, and it would be nice for him to come in and prove you right. I haven't watched him in college at all so it's good to hear that he seems to be progressing to your liking!
