what’s the deal with nico? sick?

He got a knee contusion in the Dallas game, I remember him getting rocked at some point and feeling like he was laboring the rest of the game.

He hasn't even skated since apparently, so it sounds like he's more banged up than they were initially leading on.

We are terrible with and without Nico, with and without Palms, with and without Jack Etc. At some point you need to start holding onto the good pieces while the fat falls off and is replaced.

We are never going to get better if we keep letting go of pieces who can help to get more scratch offs.

Do I need to explain the difference between trading Coleman and Palms and trading Jack and Nico? Who is it that we "keep letting go of"? We traded Hall this year and got better. What other guys have we moved or gotten rid of for draft picks and prospects? Lovejoy, Boyle, and Johansson last year? Every one of these guys was a pending UFA. The vast majority of picks and prospects have moved OUT of the organization recently as we tried to patch problems in the roster.

Picks and prospects for Palmieri
Picks and prospects for Johansson
Picks and prospects for Mueller
Picks and prospects for Grabner
Picks and prospects for Maroon
Picks and prospects for Subban
Picks and prospects for Gusev

It's right to call draft picks scratch offs, because they frequently miss. That's why you need more of them.

Sounds like you have given up on getting better. That’s the difference. I can’t see how we improve by getting rid of our best existing pieces. There’s a long term theory but it’s like waiting for some unknown cavalry to ride in.

Just my opinion, one of many plausible ones. Not trying to be snarky.

I have not given up on getting better. My argument is that this season is not a minor setback, it is a catastrophe. We need to respond appropriately and pick up the pieces. I think if you're extending Coleman and Palmieri you're deluding yourself about the capability of this team to win in the next two seasons. There just aren't enough pieces.

New Jersey(No Fanz!)
Remember the fall of 2017 we just drafted Hischier, we got Johansson for a song, and then Bratt comes out of nowhere and looks like a breakout star, and we were like "yeah the defense is still **** but hey look we got Butcher and he looks good out there, I'm sure it will all sort itself out and not still be a problem in two and a half years nope". And the season started and we were just rolling teams, Coleman and Gibbons and Noesen looked like one of the best 4th lines in the league. And Kinkaid used to post those tweets with all the emojis for the different players after wins, and he sucked but we all pretended he didn't suck because he seemed like a cool guy and he tweeted his weird date with some Instagram musician to like Qdoba or something. Lol. "Hey honey I make a million dollars a year, let's go to Qdoba". And someone on the boards critiqued his technique on Twitter and Kinkaid was like "who the **** are you?" but not those exact words.

And our good players were YOUNG. Hischier, Bratt, Butcher, Zacha. "Man it's weird McLeod didn't make the team but I'm sure he'll be fine, he'll be up soon..."

Good times.

QDoba?

I thought it was Chipotle? :sarcasm:

Latest rumor on Coleman from the Edmonton Journal:

Could you get a Blake Coleman for Jesse Puljujarvi and either a 3rd or another prospect (say a Dmitri Samorukov or William Lagesson)?
I think maybe so. Stay tuned.

I'd be somewhere between upset and mad if this happened.

Of Palmieri, Gusev, and Coleman, the Devils should keep at least one and trade at least one. Keeping all 3 doesn't make sense and trading all 3 doesn't make sense. I'm not sure which is the best long-term bet - I think Gusev is the worst bet but I also think he would have by far the worst return.

What is the injury status on Vatanen anyway? I haven't paid close attention. My fear is if he is out of the lineup for much longer, we'll still have him after the TD. Then, some jackass GM will offer him a ridiculous amount of $$$ at FA and he'll walk and the Devils wind up with NADDA.

i believe he was injured blocking a shot, but not 100% sure

he skated last week with the team and was closer to returning than Nico. Maybe this is precautionary with us close to the deadline.

Honestly hoping Fitz tells the other GMs to get f***ed if they want Vatanen without giving up a 1st round pick. Get some mid round picks for Simmer and Greene (if possible) and go to the draft with our first, Arizona's first and a few mid round picks. Totally fine with that.

I would think Gusev's game may have the best longevity. Just my opinion but I could see the other two hitting a wall before Gusev.

I think Coleman could be a usefully 4th liner though, even after he hits a wall. I think that PK and defensively reliability will remain useful even as the energy level inevitably drops sort of like a Pat Conacher kind of defensive center...I think Palmieri is probably the guy you move first...But that's a tough call being a "Jersey guy" and obviously a fan favorite.

inb4 vatanen for a 2nd rd pick, conditional 3rd

that's my guess
That's the most likely return, but there's an outside possibility we can pull a 1st if we play hardball. It risks getting a lower return though, if we wait it out too long at the deadline.

I mean Shattenkirk got a 1st++ a few years ago, so it's not out of the realm of possibility.

I think a 2nd and 3rd is too low for Vatanen....a 2nd and an NHL close prospect is closer.

for vats, i’m wondering if we can get a 2nd and a conditional 2021 1st if he re-signs. somewhat risky though
