Ray didn't push back. He got knocked around repeatedly.

Gudbranson is 6'5 222 lbs. Raymond is 5'11" 175 lbs.

It's important that Raymond not letting getting knocked down prevent him from going where he needs to go, but that's not the same thing.

The Homer analogy also isn't at all the same thing. The message is if you knock Raymond down again, you're going to have to answer to someone your same size and potentially take yourself off the ice for 5 minutes.

To be clear, I could do without fighting in hockey. But it's part of the game, as is physical intimidation. You're position is oversimplified. Because Gudbranson will continue to play physical doesn't mean going after him has zero impact.
He pushed in the scrum. Scored the goal and let Gudbranson have it.

And it's exactly the same thing. No amount of abuse scared Homer from the crease. Nothing is going to make Gudbranson stop. He doesn't care what Chia or whoever you want to bring in will do to him.

why does the blue line really need to be a foot wide anymore? it's not like they're playing on infrequently painted / poorly maintained ice like it was decades ago.

Ok the Red Wings apparently need to work on not facing their open hand towards the shooter when defending.

Homer standing in front of the net taking crosschecks is not the same thing as someone the same size as Gudbranson's making him square up and get punched in the face and take a 5 minute penalty.

As I said, you're oversimplifying it.

Essentially, "Gudbranson will continue to play physical so there's no point in doing anything"

It's not oversimplifying it. It is just simple.

Ray needs to figure out a way to deal with physical play because we can't afford to dress a scrub just to fight all of his battles for him.

And guys like Gudbranson will keep playing physically because that is what they get paid to do. Hurt feelings on the opposing team or not.

Ummm how??
He watched highlights from Jack Hughes' hat trick the other day. He just ripped a shot off the goalie's dome from slightly further out on the goal line than Copp was.

Right simple. As in oversimplifying. Like making a strawman about dressing a scrub to fight Raymond's battles for him.

It ignores a lot of what goes on the ice with your dismissive "hurt feelings."

This is a pointless discussion. You're ignoring how the game is actually played and are reducing it to a math equation.

Ok. Rasmussen jumps Gudbranson. Now what? What actually changes on subsequent shifts. Nothing.
