I mean couldnt have just buried him in the minors? Either way cap space doesnt really matter to them and another bad contract off the books

His contract is up after this coming season. They basically freed him a year early, and ate a 500k cap hit a year extra. Lets him attempt to try and sign else ware. He ended up being a scratch quite a few games last year. He had negative value. And they had no options to ever trade him.

It could be a move to make a point. “I’m Steve ****ing Yzerman, and there will be no bad contracts on my watch.” It’s a pretty powerful move if your a young player trying to make bank in the future. This move can help keep those future AAV’s down

Boy, after Brad Stuart...., Ken Holland really fumbled things in attempt to hang on for dear life. (Looking back at Ken Holland’s history in free agency)

They don't really save cap by doing this versus burying, but they save 500k in money (and 500k of what they still pay is paid next year instead of this year) and a contract spot.

I mean... he signed some stinkers in Tampa.

Kinda shocked they didn't just ride it out for the year but with only 500k next year this allows him to not ride the bus in the AHL and he can play in his home country if he desires.

I know as fans we tend to look things from a cap perspective. But I think sometimes with teams, management/coaches just dont want guys collecting a paycheck who arent contributing much, hanging around the other guys. They mean business and they want everyone pulling on the same rope.

Probably this .. I imagine this buyout was a mutual agreement. Nielsen probably doesn't want to sit in the pressbox or risk being waived down to the AHL.

Given it's not a big impact on Detroit's cap situation, it's probably more of a courtesy thing by Yzerman

24 career playoff games in a career of over 900 regular season games for a 37 year old. That seems hard to do.

Even Taylor Hall has him beat with 25 playoff games.
