Should JR consider inviting guys like Cory Sarich or Paul Ranger to camp? Sarich was involved in an accident last year, but he's been training all summer and ready to help a team. As for Ranger, it's been 3 seasons since he came back, played in Switzerland last season. Maybe he can help if he's back to what he was in his TB days. Inviting them to camp wouldn't hurt.

If a guy like Cory Sarich could come in on a PTO and actually have a chance to make the team then that speaks volumes about our D. Don't need anymore marginal bottom pairing guys back there

No. I think we have enough guys that we are hoping one or two will turn into something. As it stands right now, we have the following guys:

Letang
Maatta
Cole
Pouliot
Dumo
Lovejoy
Scuderi
Gonchar-PTO
Erixon
Clendening
Andersen

That's 11 guys that are trying to make the NHL team. The Pens really don't have a need for a guy they hope can be an NHL defenseman. The only thing they need is a legit top 4 guy, which neither of those guys will be even if everything goes right.

I completely forgot about Cory Sarich. Always liked him, he's the type of defenseman we need. But I can't imagine the pros would outweigh the cons.

Yes, if we can get a time machine and go back to 2007. If we can't, then no.

Paul Ranger and Cory Sarich are done. But, Brett Bellemore would be intriguing. Surprised that he remains unsigned; always thought he did well for Carolina. His ability to clear the crease and lay the body has been greatly missed since Despres and Bortuzzo were traded away.

That being said; there's a ******** of defensemen currently on the roster.

It's even worse when you break it down to waiver status of defensemen currently listed on the roster.

Wavier Eligible
Adam Clendening
Ian Cole
Brian Dumoulin
Tim Erixon
Sergei Gonchar (PTO)
Kris Letang
Ben Lovejoy
Will O'Neill
Steve Oleksy
Rob Scuderi
David Warsofsky

Waiver Exempt
Niclas Andersen
Olli Maatta
Derrick Pouliot

They're already in a spot where they're going to be forced to send Pouliot to WBS. The last thing they need to do is bring in more defensemen and complicate it even further. Even worse, they may be stuck carrying 8 defensemen on the NHL roster unless they want to expose 3 (or 4) of Andersen, Clendening, Dumoulin, and Erixon to waivers.

Cory Sarich could be just what we need... if he could still play at his peak. He was a defensive-defenseman who didn't get killed in shot suppression. Unfortunately, *was* is the key word there. Doubt he can be that anymore.

Pouliot is not going to WBS. They will expose those guys to waivers before sending him down.
