TDA and EK are PMD's. Burns not so much but still a good passer and with a big shot. Canes could deploy a 3F/2D PP1 alignment with Burns looking for one-timers at the point while EK play PPQB.
That seems a tad awkward, though, with both being right handed shots. I guess Karlsson could play the right point and sweep the puck across to Burns on the left… that would work well enough, but it would take Karlsson away from the middle of the ice.
That said, one thing that drives me crazy about the Canes PP is that they routinely put guys in a weird handedness position, which locks them up receiving passes and costs them that split-second of crispness which can break down a defense. This has been an issue for a while now so obviously they’re willing to live with it.
One thing I could potentially see would be Karlsson coming down and effectively playing as a 4th forward with Burns alone up top. That would probably be the best use of EK on the roster, analytically speaking. Let him break the puck out of the defensive zone and take it all the way behind the net if he wants, disrupting the PK structure while other guys find gaps to exploit. That could really be a video game dynamic once they get used to it.
2 - if the TDA trade is now dependent on EK deciding to go to Carolina instead of Pittsburgh.
This is the scenario I’m going with. I think Philly has zero realistic takers on TDA other than this scenario with the Canes, and the Canes are interested mainly because they have proof of concept that he can thrive within their system. With nobody else threatening to move on TDA, there’s nothing to force the Canes to close a deal until they see what happens with EK. That tells us a lot about their order of priorities right now.
