This is a good comparison on paper. I haven't watched much of McAvoy. I would say Nurse is currently better but McAvoy has a higher ceiling.

McAvoy. Nurse has been getting caved in without McDrai. He needs to at least tread water before I'd compare him to a player that's been a successful #1 for four years.

McAvoy without Begeron, Marchand, Pastrnak & Krejci vs Nurse without McDavid & Draisaitl. Both at 5v5.

McAvoy, and it's a clear lead. He impacts both defense and offense at a rate where only one/two blueliners have done it better this year

Nurse is having a great season though, tip of the hat to him.

McAvoy for sure. I'm just happy that the Oilers finally have a true 25 minute+ Dman who can anchor the top pairing and an evolving young D core that will probably be really good in a few seasons. It's been a long time since you could say that as an Oilers fan. Here's to hoping Klefbom can return to hockey and play at the level he has in the past as that would be a huge boost.

I'd be interested to see Nurses stats without Barrie (in addition to McDrai)

I do know Nurses stats taking a massive beating with Barrie

Although, they didnt wouldnt be as nealry good as McAvoys

McAvoy. Legit #1 who can do it all, including play physical. I've been impressed with the steps Nurse took this year though. So much for all those people telling us Ristolainen was a way better pick than him

Numbers are about the same, but the sample size is only ~125 minutes, which is like six games of 5v5 ice time for Nurse. Too small a sample to draw conclusions from one way or another. For all I know half those minutes apart could be from Barrie making poor line changes and Nurse is stuck in the dzone, or it could be dzone starts in general against top competition, while Barrie gets sheltered.

McAvoy. That's not a knock on Nurse, but McAvoy is one of the very best d-men in the NHL, and should win a Norris or two.
