Might just be me, but i've about had enough. It is NOT acceptable to turn up for 6 weeks a year. His pathetic D, stupid stick penalties (admittedly less this year) and non-existent regular season offence cannot be down to anything but effort when you consider his post-season production.

If it carries on like this and seeing as missing the play-offs entirely is a real possibility, i'd buy him out unless it improves. He's at the age where it's just not going to get any better as time goes by.

Mod edit March 25 update:

BRIERE OUT INDEFINITELY

http://flyers.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=64095&navid=DL|PHI|home

Flyers GM Paul Holmgren announced that forward Danny Briere is out indefinitely with a concussion.

Briere missed last night's game at Pittsburgh, his first missed game, since being out a four-game span at the start of the season.

The injury occured during one of the team's practices within their five-day break between games from Mar. 19-23.

Also, missing last night's game at Pittsburgh was defenseman Nicklas Grossmann. Holmgren announced that he is day-to-day with his upper-body injury.

The Flyers had an off-day from on-ice practice today. Coming in for team meetings and an off-ice workout. They resume their schedule of games tomorrow when they open up a five-game homestand against another Atlantic Division rival, the New York Rangers.

Frankly, I think he's as good as gone once the buy out period begins which sucks. I love Briere and his leadership he brings with the younger guys. But having a cap hit at 6.5 and us having to resign quite a few players before his contract is up, it's just not worth keeping him around.

I love the guy when he is scoring big goals, but when he isn't he just isn't worth 6.5 cap hit. If we can get a Perry or Ryan type player this offseason to play with Giroux and Voracek you have to buy him out

He hasn't been that good in the playoffs since 2010. He did great vs. Buffalo in 2011 because he had extra incentive with them being his old team. Against Boston he was a disaster. Last year in that no defence series with Pittsburgh he put up the points again but against the Devils, not so much. He has to put up a ton of points to make his defensive liabilities seem less significant.

I think Briere has admitted in the past he "conserves energy" during the regular season  I'm assuming, now with the buyout, this is his final year in Phillly. He'll be 36 next year and has a huge caphit. Cya.

His D is actually decent this year...since he isn't at center. He shows flashes of his old self, but overall he just looks off a lot of the time. For instance, in the 1st tonight he could have had a goal if he had stopped to the left of the net where he usually goes to wait for rebounds. He just cruised right by that spot and a moment later the puck goes there. Old Briere probably scores on that. Modern Briere misses the chance completely while skating to an area that didn't need more players.

He does a decent job as a playmaker at even strength, but is a clear step below Voracek in that regard; possibly below Read as well. He struggles mightily to create/finish chances for himself at even strength, which sucks for someone at his cap hit...I guess all those who complained about his contract length when he was signed were on to something, eh?

On the plus side, he is an important part of the PP. The PP tends to be at it's most productive when he's out there, according to Behindthenet. On the downside, this all adds up to make him a VERY expensive PP specialist.

His shooting percentage is about the same as usual, but as mentioned he can't create or finish chances on his own unless he has space. Also, for the first time in his career I think he looks like a small player who gets bullied around.

tl;dr:

He's an old guy declining with a contract that was a bit too long and a cap hit too high.

Despite his struggles he has managed 2 goals and 3 assists so far this week. Which doubles his season point total. So I guess he's either heating up, or this is his version of a hot streak nowadays.

He's a good sniper, but no one seems to know that. Not the fans, the coaches, or Danny himself. There's no reason he should be a center anymore. I see very little reason why he should be a RW anymore. Just stick him on the left side of the ice; either right next to the net for rebound slam dunks, or at the left circle for disgusting shots, and let him go to town.

Though I also agree what he does/could provide isn't worth his cap hit.

It's kind of hard to get slam dunks and snipe goals from the left side when the entire team does nothing but skate the puck up and down the side wall, or skate across the blue line and take a shot directly into the player in front of him...

At this stage, he is equal sixth on the club in points after missing the first four games and starting cold. That's not too bad... Better than I personally expected, as he seems to be continuing the trend of becoming less and less visible during the regular season with each passing year.

I'm torn on the issue of buying him out. On one hand, he is one of the team's few veteran leaders and is still capable of great things. On the other hand, he's getting more tentative with age (he seems to be getting knocked off the puck even more than usual this year) and while a still a pretty good contributor has a bad cap hit for what he brings...

Could go either way as I see it. My gut feeling is that he won't be bought out.

Ya, maybe there will be a team who desperately needs to hit the cap floor, but Briere would also need to waive his NTC. Shame he doesn't seem to have much value anymore.

If he waive his NTC he seems like a perfect fit for a team like Nashville. They need offensive punch and his actual salary becomes really low. I would think they would give up something of value for him.
