Plays Junior A for the Merritt Centennials, made the BCHL All-Rookie team last season. Committed to Michigan Tech for the 2014-15 season. Ranked 166th among North American skaters. Attended a 1 day evaluation camp of the Montreal Canadiens three weeks before the draft.

Decent frame, but like most Junior A prospects, not really known to most fans. His stat line reads like a defensively orientated guy, but only 28 PIMS makes me think a more finesse defender.

Seventeen-year-old Merritt Centennials defenceman Dane Birks can be forgiven if he was a little tired in class this past week.

The Grade 12 student at Merritt Secondary School ex-perienced the thrill of a lifetime in slightly less than 48 hours as he was the only BCHL player invited to a special evaluation camp put on by the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday, June 5 at the Bell Sports Complex, home of the legendary original-six NHL franchise.

Birks is starting his first full season in the BCHL, after playing a handful of games as an affiliate player for Trail last year, but is off to an extremely impressive start. Through the Cents' first five games, Birks has two goals and 6 assists for eight points. Listed heights and weights can always be questionable, but Birks went from being listed at 6'1" 165 lbs. last season with Creston Valley of the KIJHL, to 6'3" 190 lbs. this year with Merritt. He is an August '95 birthdate so he is eligible for this year's NHL Draft. He was not listed on NHL Central Scouting's early players to watch list for the BCHL, but if he continues scoring at over a point per game pace, it seems like he'll probably play himself onto the NHL's radar.
