Both. I don't care about the penalties. Take the ****ing toys away.

But if just one, Girardi, absolutely no question.

I think we should move both - G body is tired you can see it in OT hockey - he barely skates - he seldom on the opposite blueline with the rush of the forwards, and same thing with Staal. They are way too slow for modern hockey, they are both exhausted after a long career.

Both. They're worse than dead cap space now. Might as well reduce them from $11.2 million of negative value to $5-6 million of neutral value.

Assuming trades aren't available, easily both.

You can't have your highest paid dman be one dimensional and abysmal in that dimension, let alone your two highest paid dmen.

We're at a point where if the cap penalty was 100% of the cap hit, an argument could still be made that it'd be worth it.

Not sure in a way. They're both awful, but I think Girardi can be useful defending power plays and as a third pairing guy. Staal is in my mind much worse, but we may not get enough cap relief unless he accepts a trade.

Sure would like both gone, though.

I think some idiot team would bite on Staal if we retained 50%. It would not shock me at all.

No way either of them waive to go to a cap floor team. This is why the buyout is our best option

They might...u could always threaten them with being a healthy scratch every game....is rather play in Vegas than sit in ny

It would never happen...and it would be wrong...but there are ways.

Buyouts for any significant contract are beyond dumb in a salary cap league.

Try to trade Staal. He's taking up Skjei's ice time at this point.

I think a team will bite on Staal at 50% retained just for his name alone. Question is, does Gorton let it be known that he's available?

We just need to bite the bullet on Girardi for one more season.

Reading the tea leaves, the Rangers might not be a playoff team next year. Pittsburgh is Pittsburgh. Washington will still be very good even if they lose Alzner and Oshie. Columbus has some more excellent offensive firepower coming in next year and will be good as long as Bobrovsky is healthy. I can see Philly leapfrogging the Rangers next year. They'll have a good, young, exciting defense, and may get into the playoffs if they go out and get a goalie like Bishop.

Test the trade market at the next deadline and see if someone will take him for two years with 50% retention. Go full force for Tavares next July 1st if he gets to free agency. The team needs a difference maker outside of Lundqvist.

buy them both out. You're technically removing one of them by buying them both out. And Skjei, Graves and Beer Glass are all cheap right now. Don't give this coaching staff the opportunity to use either of them after this playoff series.

Obv,if trading both at teh right price could happen...
but realistically it is only one, and that is Staal, because he remains in control otherwise with NMC

Girardi there is the hope with NMC morphing into NTC, we can pay expensive but tolerable bribe and move to a cap dweller. If not, if we can't send him to the A, we tell him to hang and practice but not dress.

That looks like only way to somewhat affordably remove both, which is necessary.

Can't move Girardi to the A for another 3 seasons I don't think

Cap penatlies and wasted dollars can't be on the ice for goals against. I'll start a Kickstarter to help the Rangers get back some of the money they'll lose. AV too since they just signed him to an idiotic 3 year extension.

How much are we going to be spending next year on defensemen?
McD - $4.7 million
Skjei - $0.925 million
Smith ~ $3.5-4.5 million if re-signed
Bereglazov - $1.775 million counting max performance bonuses
Clendo ~ $0.6 million if they're smart enough to keep him

Total - $10.5-11.5 million for those 5

Other in-house possibilities:
Kampfer - $0.65 million
Graves - $0.656657 million
Pedrie - $0.7675 million

UDFA market:
Pionk, Gross, Borgman, possibly others

Outside UFAs:
Shattenkirk - $6.5-7.5 million

Still need to dump:
Klein - $2.9 million
Holden - $1.65 million

Buyouts:
Girardi - $2,611,111 million
Staal - $2,133,333 million

It's a dicey situation and the same front office that created this mess is going to be tasked with cleaning it up.

Actual dollar amount is fairly irrelevant, so as a side note: Bereglazov's cap hit is going to be $0.925 regardless of bonuses.

Salary cap is expected to rise to ~76 million for next year. If Smith resigns at $4.25 million and Shattenkirk signs for $7.25 million, we buy-out Girardi and manage to get rid of Klein + Holden, that's $26.26 million allocated assuming Staal stays and Bereglazov gets the 6th spot. That'd be 35% of the cap. If Staal is bought out and Girardi stays that number is 34%
