Sept. 12 updates:

Dan Cleary takes big pay cut to stay with Red Wings

Being a Detroit Red Wing is more important to forward Dan Cleary than adding numbers to his paycheque.

The 15-year National Hockey League veteran on Thursday chose to remain in Detroit on a one-year contract worth $1.75 million US rather than sign a professional tryout (PTO) contract with the Philadelphia Flyers.

The 34-year-old Cleary, who made $3 million last season, met with Red Wings general manager Ken Holland and head coach Mike Babcock on Wednesday and told the Detroit News in a text message he would arrive at the team’s training camp Thursday evening in Traverse City, Mich.

LW Dan Cleary did not report to the first day of Flyers' camp Thursday at the Wells Fargo Center, meaning several rookies are now battling for a roster spot, incluidng Tye McGinn, Scott Laughton and Michael Raffl.

Cleary had agreed to a tryout contract, but apparently has had second thoughts.

I guess there's always a chance Cleary arrives tomorrow. But the fact he was reportedly negotiating with the Red Wings on Wednesday makes this whole thing fishy.

Cleary, 34, an unrestricted free agent, had all summer to get a deal done with Detroit. When that didn't happen, he agreed to a tryout contract with the Flyers.

Now it appears he used the Flyers as leverage to get the Wings to up the ante. Detroit had originally offered him a three-year deal for about $6 million, sources said.

The Flyers were going to give him a three-year contract for $8.25 million when they cleared enough cap space, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Earlier in the week, GM Paul Holmgren said there was not a preconceived deal and that Cleary had to make the team during camp.

Dan Cleary did not participate in the Flyers' camp and is not currently with the team. According to Elliotte Friedman of HNIC "Working theory is he simply did not want to leave DET. Expectation is he will re-sign -- probably for less than he would get in PHI."

Daniel Cleary is heading back to Detroit after all.

The Red Wings announced on Thursday that they have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the unrestricted free agent forward and he will be flying to Traverse City, Michigan to join the club for camp.

The news comes just days after reports surfaced that he would be with the Philadelphia Flyers on a tryout contract.

Detroit general manager Ken Holland said the deal is worth $1.75 million.

Sept. 11 updates:

IS DAN CLEARY COMING TO FLYERS' CAMP?

Dan Cleary was part of a group expected to skate at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Wells Fargo Center.

A Flyers official said Daniel Cleary would report to camp Thursday, but Hockey Night in Canada's Elliotte Friedman reported that because of a "complication," the left winger will NOT join the Flyers.

Waiting for GM Paul Holmgren to respond.

Cleary did not return a phone call on the matter. The Detroit FRee Press had reported that Cleary had agreed to a three-year deal worth $2.75 million per season.

Despite a report stating otherwise, the Flyers still expect Dan Cleary to report to training camp.

According to Elliotte Friedman of the CBC, there has been some kind of “complication†and Cleary will not be at training camp when it opens on Thursday at the Wells Fargo Center.

However, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said he isn't aware of any issue.

"I don't know anything until I hear it from the horse's mouth," Holmgren said.

Curiously, the free agent left wing, who an NHL source said had a three-year, $8.25 million contract waiting for him to sign on Oct. 1 when the Flyers would become salary cap compliant (see story), was to have been at the club’s photo shoot on Wednesday.

A club official said Wednesday morning that Cleary’s appearance had been pushed back to Thursday instead.

Sept. 10:

FLYERS INVITE CLEARY TO TRAINING CAMP

It appears the Flyers are planning on a very competitive training camp.

Last week it was veteran defenseman Hal Gill accepting a professional try out contract with the Flyers, this week it's veteran left wing Daniel Cleary.

Cleary signed a PTO with the Flyers Tuesday and will be in camp with the team Thursday. This likely means the Flyers will not bring Simon Gagne to camp on a tryout.

If the Flyers want to sign Cleary - or Gill for that matter - they'll have to clear some cap space first, which could be on Sept. 30, when Chris Pronger is officially moved to the long-term injury list and his money comes off the salary cap.

MEDIA SPECULATION

Unable to get the commitment he needed from the Detroit Red Wings, Daniel Cleary opted to accept an offer to play for the Philadelphia Flyers.

Cleary, who had played for the Wings since 2005, remained hopeful to stay in Detroit, but told the Free Press shortly before midnight that “I’m going to Philly.†Cleary said he’d have more to say later today.

Cleary was offered three years and $2.75 million per season from the Flyers, though they cannot make the deal official until the end of the month because they are already over the salary cap. While teams don’t have to be compliant until the season begins in October, the Flyers are bringing Cleary in as a professional tryout. They get $5 million in salary cap relief as soon as they put defenseman Chris Pronger on long-term injured reserve.

Daniel Cleary is going to be a Flyer, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Cleary and the Flyers have agreed to terms on a three-year, $8.25 million deal on the eve of training camp, though the Flyers have not yet released any information.

Officially, according to the Free Press, the Flyers plan to bring Cleary to camp on a tryout contract before inking his deal at the end of the month because they are already over the salary cap. The contract also reportedly includes a no-trade clause.

Cleary, 34, had been hoping to return to the Red Wings - where he has played since 2005 - and remained a free agent through the summer to try and work out a deal. He is coming off a 5-year, $14 million deal in Detroit, where he won a Stanley Cup in 2008.

The Flyers appear to have found their third-line left winger.

General manager Paul Holmgren confirmed on Tuesday that Dan Cleary will be at the Flyers' camp Thursday on a tryout contract. However, Holmgren said no deal was in place, as was reported by the Detroit Free Press.
"There are no promises. It's just like the Hal Gill (contract)," he said.

The Detroit newspaper said Cleary had agreed to a three-year deal worth $2.75 million per year, and that it would be signed after the Flyers gain cap space by putting Chris Pronger on the LTIR list at the start of the season.

Ugh. That'd be horrible.

If we're not bringing Gagne back for a year, should use one of our younger guys.

I wouldn't mind Cleary cheap on a 1 year deal, though I would rather him be brought on a PTO. 3 years is just silly for him.

I know little to nothing about Dan Cleary, is that bad?

He is all heart.

Will battle in the corners, small but not soft, backchecks hard, by reports is great, GREAT locker room guy. Everybody loves him. Great leadership, experienced guy.

But the style has taken toll on his body and began to break done in 11-12. Got worse in 12-13. His knee(s) are bad, skating has gotten very slow. Not fast enough to do that stuff that made him effective.

For your sake, I hope you don't sign him for 3 years. Or pray to god he bounces back. Well, that cap hit won't be that bad.

I actually think little faster but grittier and better work ethic having Mike Knuble is somewhat good comparison at this point. D is little better too but has dropped the past few years.

Wings apparently offered him a 2 year deal he declined over the summer? He wouldn't sign cheap.

He's getting older and hasn't looked great other than during the last playoff run. 3 years would be a horrible signing.

So in other words his style of play is total opposite of a perimeter player which Gagne has become. Doesn't surprise me the Flyers would prefer that..however if Cleary is a shell of his former self because of the wear due to his style of play not sure I would want him and would still prefer one of the rookies trying to secure the open spot....

Cleary is a much worse option than Gagne. I'll be pissed if we sign Cleary. And Dreger said it's for 3 years?? The guy looked absolutely useless last year for the Red Wings.
