Here is the list going back to 2000 for the previous overager player of the year winners, lets pump the breaks a bit on him as this list outside of Callahan is nothing to write home about.

2014-15 Joseph Blandisi, Barrie Colts
2013-14 Dane Fox, Erie Otters
2012–13 Charles Sarault, Sarnia Sting
2011–12 Andrew Agozzino, Niagara IceDogs
2010–11 Jason Akeson, Kitchener Rangers
2009–10 Bryan Cameron, Barrie Colts
2008–09 Justin DiBenedetto, Sarnia Sting
2007–08 Michael Swift, Niagara IceDogs
2006–07 Tyler Donati, Belleville Bulls
2005–06 Ryan Callahan, Guelph Storm
2004–05 André Benoit, Kitchener Rangers
2003–04 Martin St. Pierre, Guelph Storm
2002–03 Chad LaRose, Plymouth Whalers
2001–02 Cory Pecker, Erie Otters
2000–01 Randy Rowe, Belleville Bulls

I'm going to pretend that was the only one I saw :sarcasm:

There's always exceptions and outliers, and the reason to have some hope for Blandisi is he was more productive in his earlier years than a lot of those players. I think Charles Sarault in particular had like single digit points in 60+ games in his draft year, or something? So there's reasons for optimism, even if he's still a long shot.

But I absolutely wouldn't peg him for a potential NHL player next season. One of the few knocks on his game is defense, and there's no way a 20-year-old potential liability is gonna stick around for long on Lou (or someone else's? :sarcasm:) team.

Good point. I definitely wouldn't put him on the white horse as the savior but the fact he has always been productive is a good sign.

Let's see. Maybe we got a steal but worst case we lost nothing in taking a chance on him except the money in his contract.

Yeesh, most of those guys went on to careers in the East Coast league. Let's hope Blandisi is the exception and not the rule.

Very uneasy about Wood's. Feel there is potential there, but I worry he stays in college, comes out as a UFA and signs elsewhere.

Is there much precedent for a guy not going pro until 5 or 6 years after he is drafted?

Any chance he has a huge freshman year and then signs next offseason.

Considering the fact that he stayed in school this year at 19 years old, I highly, highly doubt he leaves school early. Especially after 1 season.

As per the college players going UFA, I think people worry way too much about it. It's only happened a few times. If anything, that should be the time when this team should be clicking on all cylinders -- if he does as well as he has the potential to -- he could be joining the team in stride.
