No news, but Honka wasn't at the Swift Current training camp nor is he participating in pre-season games.

No news but AHL seems to be a possibility as well.

To me, the AHL seems like the preferred destination, but it's probably the least likely. I still haven't found where another team successfully challenged a similar loophole. To be fair I haven't found a situation where a team failed either. So far this is the only example I can find of a team trying to work around the CHL rules with some previous European contract.
