Speculation: Dale Hawerchuk Appreciation Night

I have no idea about whether True North has any plans to honor the Jets 1.0 franchise player, Dale Hawerchuk. I am going to create a petition at change.org, and try to get 500 signatures to present to True North, and have them honor Ducky, as he deserves it.

For the entire decade of the 80's, Ducky was the Jets. He was always our leading scorer, a Hart Trophy finalist, and the Calder Trophy winner in 1981. Who can forget how well he played in the 1987 Canada Cup. He was the unsung hero of the tournament, especially in the deciding game against the USSR.

Look at how depressing and sad this is...(Phoenix 2007). Barely anyone in the crowd knows how he is. Ducky deserves better than this. Let's honor him in Winnipeg.

I couldn't agree more... I know technically he's a part of that franchise but definitely an appreciation night or something I would be 1000% in favor.

"On behalf of the province of Manitobs and the City of Winnipeg, True North would like to welcome Dale Hawerchuk and his family in honor of his great contribution to Manitoba's passion for the NHL".

Something like that before a Jets game would be neutral enough not to step on this franchise's toes.

What's your excuse?

I think we should wait until the Heritage Classic before judging the heritage intentions of True North.

Chipman ownership group already honoured Hawerchuk way back in the early 2000s before a Manitoba Moose game at the old arena.

And you feel that is sufficient? A tribute to a HOF player at an AHL game? Or IHL back then I suppose. Either way, Hawerchuk never got close to either of those leagues.

Agreed - I don't feel the need to honour any of the old Jets (except perhaps Selanne) any time soon. Give it another 3-4 seasons.

I understand that this is the Jets 2.0 and that TN has no obligation to honor any of the original Jets players.
However we cannot deny the impact the original Jets had in this city. Hawerchuk was this city's superstar for many years. It would be a shame to not remember and honor him in some way.
He's a Hall of Famer as a Jet, the only one to make it as a Jet as far I know. Despite my dislike for the Montreal Canadiens, I love how they constantly honor former players, it shows class and respect for past players.
Obviously we don't have the history yet with this team but we do have a rich hockey history in this city and it would be a very classy thing to do.
I have a feeling that TN has something special planned for next years Heritage Classic.

I think an original Jets night would be more interesting. Most of the first Jets team are still around. These guys were the original Jets.

There is no question in my mind that Hawerchuk should be the first Jets 1.0 player honoured at the MTS centre and is the most deserving. I have a feeling that True North feels the same way and will do something around the heritage classic.

It seems howerchuck is still fairly close to the org. If I'm not mistaken he's guest coaches dev camp and other things like that.

I'd say its practically a garauntee he gets some sort of moment of honour.

I would love to see Hawerchuks number retired. He was the Jets in the 80s. My favorite Jet growing up other than Cronin. It makes me ill thinking that his name is even mentioned with the PHX franchise. I wonder how Kovalchuk night would go over in the peg.

Just a warning: every other thread along these lines ended up being closed, due to discussion of Phoenix.

1. People at the MTS Centre would likely boo.
2. "We want Teemu" or "We want Ducky" chants would follow.

There is no chance that Winnipeg fans would be as polite and quiet, as the other city in question.

Dale Hawerchuk Night!

Every fan gets:
-one Dale Hawerchuk commemorative bobblehead
-one pack of cigarettes (must smoke in the Jets lockerroom)

Not included: a good linemate.
