Maybe on a one year deal but you pay more when you want 3 years. Its a calculated gamble that he is outplaying that contract in year 2 or 3.

Maybe a tiny bit more than i'd have expected, but that extra year could be really valuable to the Stars. He's a good #4ish defenceman who brings a lot of desirable attributes to the mix, and still has a bit of upside...for basically #5ish money for 3 years. If he takes another little step forward next year, this could become a steal of a deal.

Johns is underrated even among Stars fans. I like this. Johns is a bit streaky and has games where he looks like an absolute stud first pairing D only to have some costly brainfarts a few games later. Should be a bit more consistent and he’ll might take the next step as a #2/3 someday, but I like everything he brings even if he doesn’t. Hits like a truck, stands up for teammates, an underused hard shot and even 25/30 point upside if everything works out. Should score in double digits somewhere in his career, me thinks. His passing just needs a bit of work.
