He gets a lot of hate on HFStars from the usual suspects- and McDonnell's comments did no additional favours... But some scouts did have them on their radar going into that year's draft- f*** it lets see what happens when he turns pro.

Guess he took enough of a leap this year (lol) that Dallas didn't want to lose him.

First season with North Bay - 36pts in 46 games

This season - 66pts in 61 games

So next year when he's with Texas maybe he takes another step.

Maybe not.

I'm just saying Dallas must see something in the kid to keep him around instead of letting him walk, which would've been the case had they not signed him this season, right?

That 2021 was such a crapshot . The perfect draft to take flyers on players because so many barely played . Ertel played in smaller junior league because his regular team didn't play which the Stars scouting staff got to see. No problem with taking a shot with a lower round pick on that.

Unlikely to ever be an NHL player but if he's an AHL regular thats fine too. You need those too.
