I remember that in his 18-19 season I thought to myself "20% shooting and nearly 40 goals at age 34. This is it, this is the bright and brilliant flash of a star going nova and dying, and someone is going to be drawn to him and get burned in the blast". And for one year I appeared to be correct. I'm glad for him that he decided that age isn't real. What a player! This contract is a steal for Dallas.

Doesn’t seem like the wheels are falling off, and incredible that Dallas got a one year deal.

Drafting and cap management has kept this Dallas team in it. Amazing work and quite underrated to be honest.
It really has. I think they are going to win the cup this year or next, mostly due to one great draft year.

Good for him dude has been killing it in Dallas after a slow first season. Especially at an age most players are declining a lot or retired. Needs 49 points I think for 1,000.

Performance bonuses look like guarantees to be hit. So let’s call this contract what it is: 1 year x 5.5M.

Still an appropriate contract for a great player though who’s always got it done with his smarts and net front mastery. Low risk for a wheels falling off induced regression in his game IMO.

Nope.

It's 3.5M.

The bonuses, if earned, will be computed at the end of the season.

If there's not enough cap space left, the extra portions will count on the 2024-25 cap hit.

Yup, so it’s a 1 year $5.5m AAV contract where some of the cap hit may count against the 2024-25 cap rather than 2023-24.
At the start of the season, it will be a 3.5M cap hit, not a 5.5M cap hit.

If they spend to the max in 2023-2024, the 2M in bonuses will be applied to the 2024-2025 cap.

Said otherwise, they don't need to keep a 2M cushion at the start of the season.

Agreed, no need to keep a $2m cushion.

But at the end of the day the cap piper will be collecting that $2m in performance bonuses next season or the following season.
