And a few prominent right-side defencemen of the 90s and early 00s.

Rob Blake

90-91: Brian Benning 0.78
91-92: Brian Benning 0.60, Peter Ahola 0.43
92-93: Paul Coffey 0.90 (47 GP before trade), after trade Alexei Zhitnik 0.72
93-94: Alexei Zhitnik 0.62, Tim Watters 0.33
94-95: injured, 24 GP

97-98: Mattias Norstrom 0.44, Garry Galley 0.31
98-99: Mattias Norstrom 0.81, Steve Duchesne 0.27
99-00: Mattias Norstrom 0.85
00-01 (LA): Mattias Norstrom 0.78
00-01 (Col, 13 GP): Ray Bourque 0.80
01-02: Martin Skoula 0.53, Greg de Vries 0.51, Adam Foote 0.43
02-03: Greg de Vries 0.34, Adam Foote 0.25
03-04: Martin Skoula 0.68, John-Michael Liles 0.19
05-06: John-Michael Liles 0.70
06-07: Lubomir Visnovsky 0.37, Mattias Norstrom 0.35

Mattias Norstrom is definitely the player I think of when I think of Blake's partner, and they did play together for several seasons. But Norstrom wasn't paired with Blake for all of Blake's Norris winning season in 97-98 - it looks like other left defencemen, including Garry Galley, spent time with Blake.

Other prominent partners included Brian Benning to start Blake's career, then Paul Coffey and Alexei Zhitnik. Later in Colorado, Martin Skoula, Adam Foote, Greg de Vries, and John-Michael Liles were all in the mix.

How much did Blake play with the top scoring forwards on his team?

90-91: Wayne Gretzky 0.26
91-92: Wayne Gretzky 0.64
92-93: Wayne Gretzky 0.66
93-94: Wayne Gretzky 0.72
94-95: injured, 24 GP
95-96: injured, 6 GP
96-97: Dmitri Khristich 0.53
97-98: Josef Stumpel 0.50
98-99: Luc Robitaille 0.56
99-00: Ziggy Palffy 0.61
00-01 (LA): Ziggy Palffy 0.44
00-01 (Col, 13 GP): Joe Sakic 0.82, Peter Forsberg -0.02
01-02: Joe Sakic 0.73
02-03: Joe Sakic 0.49, Peter Forsberg 0.43
03-04: Joe Sakic 0.42, Peter Forsberg 0.59
05-06: Joe Sakic 0.46
06-07: Mike Cammalleri 0.16

Blake definitely had some seasons where he combined a lot with Gretzky, Palffy, and Sakic. They included his highest scoring season which came in LA, and two of his post-season all-star seasons, but not his Norris-winning season in 97-98.

I know Blake's 97-98 Norris trophy is often considered one that should have gone to Lidstrom, but it's worth considering that Lidstrom tended to play with much better teammates that season, with Larry Murphy on his right side and a lot of ice time with Steve Yzerman in particular.

Eric Desjardins

90-91: Sylvain Lefebvre 0.65, J.J. Daigneault 0.50
91-92: J.J. Daigneault 0.76, Petr Svoboda 0.32
92-93: J.J. Daigneault 0.59, Kevin Haller 0.49
93-94: Kevin Haller 0.55, Petr Popovic 0.56
94-95 (PHI): Kevin Haller 0.77, Petr Svoboda 0.28
95-96: Kevin Haller 0.86
96-97: Kevin Haller 0.49, Paul Coffey 0.46, Petr Svoboda 0.42
97-98: Chris Therien 0.76, Paul Coffey 0.29
98-99: Chris Therien 0.84
99-00: Chris Therien 0.76
00-01: Michal Sykora 0.45, Chris McAllister 0.44, Dan McGillis 0.34, Chris Therien 0.28
01-02: Chris Therien 0.73
02-03: Chris Therien 0.79
03-04: Chris Therien 0.85
05-06: Chris Therien 0.56 (14 GP), Derian Hatcher 0.50

I thought of Chris Therien when I thought of Desjardins' partner. They must be one of the leaders for most minutes together by a defensive duo in the past 30 years.

Desjardins broke into the league playing with Sylvain Lefebvre and then J.J. Daigneault and Kevin Haller. Desjardins actually continued to partner with Haller after he was traded to Philadelphia. That must have made for an easier transition!

How much did Desjardins play with the top scoring forwards on his team?

90-91: Denis Savard 0.06
91-92: Kirk Muller 0.50
92-93: Kirk Muller 0.56
93-94: Vincent Damphousse 0.43
94-95 (PHI): Eric Lindros 0.49
95-96: Eric Lindros 0.53
96-97: Eric Lindros 0.50
97-98: Eric Lindros 0.46
98-99: Eric Lindros 0.66
99-00: Eric Lindros 0.67
00-01: Keith Primeau 0.63
01-02: Jeremy Roenick 0.10
02-03: Jeremy Roenick 0.18
03-04: Mark Recchi 0.23
05-06: Peter Forsberg 0.29

Both of his 50-point seasons where he was a post-season all-star - 98-99 and 99-00 - came in years where he played a lot with Eric Lindros and John Leclair.

Adam Foote

92-93: Alexei Gusarov 0.47, Curtis Leschyshyn 0.39, Kerry Huffman 0.28
93-94: Curtis Leschyshyn 0.64, Alexei Gusarov 0.16
94-95: Alexei Gusarov 0.50, Steven Finn 0.36
95-96: Alexei Gusarov 0.48, Curtis Leschyshyn 0.29
96-97: Alexei Gusarov 0.82
97-98: Alexei Gusarov 0.61, Sandis Ozolinsh 0.28, Sylvain Lefebvre 0.24
98-99: Sylvain Lefebvre 0.61, Alexei Gusarov 0.49
99-00: Ray Bourque 0.92 (14 GP), Martin Skoula 0.44, Alexei Gusarov 0.30
00-01: Ray Bourque 0.90
01-02: Greg de Vries 0.64, Rob Blake 0.43, Martin Skoula 0.31
02-03: Greg de Vries 0.49, Rob Blake 0.25
03-04: Karlis Skrastins 0.72

Foote's most frequent partner in the first half of his career was the underrated veteran of the Soviet national team Alexei Gusarov. Curtis Leschyshyn and Sylvain Lefebvre were also in the mix. Foote usually played with other defensive defencemen, not offensive defencemen.

After the Avs traded for Ray Bourque, Bourque and Foote were a great pairing for about 50 regular season games and two playoff runs.

After Bourque retired, Foote's most common partners in Colorado were first Greg de Vries and then Karlis Skrastins.

How much did Foote tend to play with the high scoring forwards on his team?

92-93: Joe Sakic 0.23, Mats Sundin 0.41
93-94: Joe Sakic 0.45, Mats Sundin 0.35
94-95: Joe Sakic 0.36, Peter Forsberg 0.21
95-96: Joe Sakic 0.22, Peter Forsberg 0.50
96-97: Joe Sakic 0.26, Peter Forsberg 0.48
97-98: Joe Sakic 0.12, Peter Forsberg 0.52
98-99: Joe Sakic 0.52, Peter Forsberg 0.31
99-00: Joe Sakic 0.56, Peter Forsberg 0.31
00-01: Joe Sakic 0.36, Peter Forsberg 0.60
01-02: Joe Sakic 0.59
02-03: Joe Sakic 0.41, Peter Forsberg 0.33
03-04: Joe Sakic 0.42, Peter Forsberg 0.52

Maybe above the average for that 98-99 through 01-02 stretch, but other than that Foote didn't tend to play more with Sakic or Forsberg.

And what about the top checkers?

92-93: Claude Lapointe 0.40
93-94: Claude Lapointe 0.31
94-95: Claude Lapointe 0.54
95-96: Troy Murray 0.10
96-97: Stephane Yelle 0.31
97-98: Stephane Yelle 0.32
98-99: Stephane Yelle 0.27
99-00: Stephane Yelle 0.46
00-01: Stephane Yelle 0.29
01-02: Stephane Yelle 0.44
02-03: Mike Keane 0.31
03-04: Steve Konowalchuk -0.05

I would say Foote had at least his share of ice time together with Claude Lapointe and Stephane Yelle in particular.

Sergei Gonchar

95-96: Brendan Witt 0.54, Joe Reekie 0.35, Mark Tinordi 0.28
96-97: Mark Tinordi 0.33, Calle Johansson 0.15
97-98: Joe Reekie 0.60, Mark Tinordi 0.33, Calle Johansson 0.25
98-99: Joe Reekie 0.63, Mark Tinordi 0.18
99-00: Joe Reekie 0.74, Dmitri Mironov 0.40
00-01: Joe Reekie 0.77, Dmitri Mironov 0.28
01-02: Joe Reekie 0.63, Frantisek Kucera 0.53
02-03: Ken Klee 0.79
03-04 (WAS): Josef Boumedienne 0.63, Brendan Witt 0.56
05-06: Ryan Whitney 0.22, Brooks Orpik 0.20
06-07: Mark Eaton 0.71 (35 GP), Josef Melichar 0.60

Gonchar's most frequent partner in Washington was Joe Reekie. Also a bit of Brendan Witt, Mark Tinordi, and Dmitri Mironov.

I'm familiar with Gonchar playing the right side as a LHS, but he must have moved to the left for one of his post-season all-star seasons when he was paired with Ken Klee.

How much did Gonchar tend to play with the high scoring forwards on his team?

95-96: Peter Bondra 0.40
96-97: Peter Bondra 0.24
97-98: Peter Bondra 0.59, Adam Oates 0.41
98-99: Peter Bondra 0.47, Adam Oates 0.65
99-00: Peter Bondra 0.46, Adam Oates 0.51
00-01: Peter Bondra 0.47, Adam Oates 0.30
01-02: Jaromir Jagr 0.73
02-03: Jaromir Jagr 0.74
03-04 (WAS): Jaromir Jagr 0.54
05-06: Sidney Crosby 0.46, Mario Lemieux 0.17
06-07: Sidney Crosby 0.51, Evgeni Malkin 0.45

Nothing out of the ordinary with Bondra, maybe one season where he played a lot with Oates.

Gonchar and Jagr appear to have played together a lot for their two full seasons in Washington. These were the two seasons where Gonchar made the post-season all star team. Similar to Desjardins getting a boost from Lindros in his two big seasons.

After going to Pittsburgh, Gonchar didn't play extra time with Crosby or Malkin.
