I'm following this kid and it will be interesting to see where he is selected? He got little exposure due to his injury, but I think he will be a great later round pick for some team.

I've been hard pressed to get a good scouting report on him, but he is mentioned in the Mckeens 2010 draft guide as having a high ceiling offensively, will be a great PP specialist and is very coachable. Again the Russian factor label has been tossed around with him??? i'm curious as to anyone else's thoughts?

I guess his injury (I've now seen Mono, spleen removal and blood disease as possible injuries) must have been fairly serious to scare teams away completely. He sounds like he should have too much potential to be skipped over completely.

Completely skipped over in 2010 and finally picked up in the final round by the Red Wings in 2011.

Wings do not seem too concerned about him coming over if be develops. Any more info on this kid? Seems like a lot of potential there.

Wings Confident about Marchenko -- Potential Steal?

"He’s one of the better young defensemen in Russia," Nill said. "Our Russian scouts know him well and he says he wants to come out in a year. So we feel we have the ability to get him (to North America) if we need to."

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2011/06/red_wings_thrilled_to_land_tom.html

Last year, he wasn't taken because of mono thought to be a blood disorder at the time, and concerns about the KHL. This year, nobody took him because it was thought he'd stay in the KHL. Apparently, the Wings think otherwise.

Does this turn out as a 7th round steal if he comes over and plays to his potential?

He was Red Armys (MHL) best defender in my mind last year, and was a big reason they become the MHL champions. He scored 38 point in 36 games in MHL and in the playoff he scored 11 points in 15 games. He has play game in KHL too (2points in 23 games last season). If he will come over he could be a steal

I don't know if he was a big reason why they won, seriously that team would beat up on most CHL teams, even with out him. By the end they had Pashnin(NYR), Andronov(STL), Kucherov(TBL), Guydechenko(FL), Grigorenko(top10 '12), Kamaev(good draft prospect for '12), and some other big time players for MHL like Gusev, Kulemin.

To be honest, I have only seen him play a few times, but the wings seem pretty confident that he'll be on the U-20 roster. Hope so.

A steal that late. But there are lots of other Russians who hasn't drafted at all. It's all different now. Looks like you can land a Russian in the 7th round or as a free agent and he'll turn out to be your star.

Yes reason maybe wrong word, but i mean he was a big part of the team who become champions :)

and yes we will see more of him in WJC next year. Pretty unknown for most of the people..

Second favorite pick by the Wings this last draft after Sproul. Like Tvedon and Jurco too, but I really think this screams classic Hakan. Why not take a risk on a 7th rounder? Never got why other teams don't feel the same.

Really like this kid and what the future could hold. Much of that belief is based off the fact that the Red Wings were willing to take a shot on him. That says something.

Is Marchenko seen more as an offensive, defensive, or two-way defenseman? I can't find any scouting reports on him.
