Wow, I didnt realize how many people would regret their original comments about the signing

Eriksson's contract was largely viewed as one of the better big contracts handed out that year (overpaid, but expected for a UFA). There were issues of fit in terms of team position, but Eriksson was a good player with demonstrated chemistry with the Sedins, coming off a good year. He was expected to be a solid contract for 3-4 years, followed by 2-3 years overpaid. Even at the end, Eriksson had a sterling defensive reputation, so was expected to be valuable to a younger team. It was shocking that his play immediately regressed year 1 to what was expected at the tail end of the contract.

There were issues with the Eriksson signing, but there was some logic so the contract was not immediately panned.

The Sutter extension was far more problematic, and given the presence of Sutter on the team, the subsequent Beagle contract was inexplicable.

Thats a good summ up. I predicted a poor showing for Eriksson even in year 1 with what I estimated was a 45 point season.

Even that was too optimistic. Who knew hed fall SO fast? Anyone ever fallen SO fast in one year like that?

Lots of players have fallen off like that, its just rare for that to line up with signing a big contract. Redden comes to mind as a player whose play cratered immediately on a big new contract with a new team. The Rangers just benefited from a difference CBA which insulated them.

Remember though that Eriksson had suffered from concussion issues for several years, and scored at a 47-49 pt pace for 3 seasons before his big last 63 pt season in Boston. It seemed like he had finally recovered from his concussion issues and begun to score like the player he was up to 2012. I agree - scoring at a 45-50 pt pace wasn't seen as unlikely (that was his pace 3 of 4 previous seasons). There was optimism due to his international play with the Sedins. It's just the bottom suddenly fell out.

Finnish newspaper Iltalehti broke the news that Vancouver Canucks would like to get rid of Loui Eriksson, but it seems that there's no team that would like to take his 6 million contract for next two years. That's quite a revelation considering that Loui Eriksson scored 30 goals only five years ago. So this seems to be quite a hard market to sell nice players these days...

So Loui Eriksson has a cap hit of 6 mil for the next two yrs. He is owed 1 million this yrs and 4 million the season after. So 5 million actual.

My question is can the Canucks find a way to move his contract for a similar contract that has a slightly lower cap hit, or is for a slightly better player and not give up too much to do so? Would teams be interested in saving a few million dollars in real money at the cost of taking on more cap hit.

The idea is to move Eriksson without having to move high picks or top prospects.

Here are some examples I came up with:

Eriksson for:

1. Frans Nielson (2 x 5.25) (actual 8)
Canucks save 750k in cap and Detroit saves 3 million in real dollars. Straight swap?

2. Dustin Brown (2 x 5.87) (actual 8)
Canucks get a better player. LA saves 3 mil. Canucks maybe add a 4th?

3. Jeff Carter (2 x 5.2) (actual 4)
This would cost LA 1 mil and they'd get the worse player so maybe a prospect and lower pick. Gadjovic + 4th?

4. Anton Stralman (2 x 5.5) (actual 10)
Florida saves 5 mil in real dollars. Stralman becomes our 5th dman. He is a better player so maybe add 4th?

5. Viktor Rask (2 x 4) (actual 8)
Minnesota save 3 mil. Players have similar value. Maybe Canucks add a depth prospect.

Anyway those are a few attempts. Before you all poo poo it does the premise make sense? Save in real dollars for slight hit to your cap? Im thinking this could interest smaller market teams.
This is beyond brutal for the Kings

That news is almost as shocking as the reports that teams are not lining up for Andrew Ladd. He's played 31 games the last 2 seasons. That work horse :sarcasm:

Well, I haven't given up hope he ends up on LTIR at some point in his final 3 seasons.

At this point, with several teams desperate to unload quality players to become cap compliant, Eriksson isn't going anywhere. The team needs to take its medicine this season and can buy him out or trade him next season.

In another world, the Canucks could move Eriksson, but it's not happening this season.
