Have to wonder what good players they're really envisioning are going to be offered up to them.
They don't have the retention slots available to play broker like SJ did last year with Foligno.
How many good teams have a $2m+ player, with term, that they need to get rid of to accommodate an acquisition, that the initial trade partner isn't going to take back in return?

I imagine instead of a retention slot it's going to be something like
Team A acquires expensive good player
Team B gets assets from team A for above player
Team Coyotes get assets from either team A or team B to take expensive bad contract from team A in order to afford expensive good player
Team A acquires expensive good player
Team B gets assets from team A for above player
Team Coyotes get assets from either team A or team B to take expensive bad contract from team A in order to afford expensive good player

Coyotes already have 2 retained contracts this season (Kuemper and OEL). The max any team can have is 3.
So they can only retain salary on one more player this season.
The retained salary slot likely is used to help facilitate a Kessel trade.

One spot left mean you have to think it would be on a player in the final year of their deal. I am wondering if it is best for them to retain on Kessel or use that spot to broker another deal.

The Yotes are basically a crappy storage facility at this point. They'll hold onto the things you don't want, but you better be paying for it.
Like a purely hypothetical but something like this:
to Avalanche: Giroux at 50% from Philly
to Philly: 2023 1st + prospect
to Coyotes: JT Compher + 4th from Colorado
I don't think it's going to be a retained salary transaction, as they'll use that to unload Kessel to the highest bidder at the deadline.

And a Pens fan ignoring their glorious past to beat up on a franchise. While they deserve it perhaps Pens fans should hold judgement until the Coyotes still fail after winning 2 top 100 all time players.

2 deadlines and 4 trades into the trend, third party retention has been worth a 4th at most. Kessel at 50% should return more.
Yeah but they could take on some teams bad contract so that team frees up space to make additions elsewhere with that freed up space.
They only have 6 players under contract for next year. They can be a dumping ground for bad contracts like they were with Vancouver. They don't have to move anyone out right away.
