Morning/Afternoon skates rarely last more than an hour especially on game days, plus you're assuming ice is available to a team the next day when they are on the road. Many times ice is being changed over and the team isn't able to get ice elsewhere in town.

They can PRACTICE in the morning and catch a flight in the afternoon to their destination. They can have a skate the morning/afternoon of the game. They can then leave the next morning on a flight and have a PRACTICE in the afternoon.

You are also assuming they will have ice available in their home city the day of the road game which is also not the case in all AHL cities.
