If there is an nhl lockout for an entire year, does a player's five-year contract essentially turn into a four-year contract because the lost year counts towards the contract length? Or, rather, does the contract get extended an extra year so the full five years is played?

They count . And above person noted they only get paid their signing bonuses so lots of players negotiate huge signing bonuses when the cba expires

The correct answer is it depends on what the PA and NHL agree on. Historically they’ve agreed that extra years aren’t added to the contracts, other then the standard situation of 18/19 year old ELC slides.

the contract doesn't get extended because of a lockout. a year of that contract is gone, like in any normal year, and the players don't get paid unless the contract includes a signing bonus for that lockout year.

A number of the large contracts are now being paid predominately as bonus money... essentially making them lockout proof. For example, McDavid's salary is actually $1.75M paid throughout the season, with $10.75M/year being paid out every July 1 for the duration of the contract. Yes it's still part of the cap hit, and yes he gets the 10.75 regardless if they lockout.

counts as a year and this time agents have a plan--go to capfriendly and see how many players have signing bonus--signing bonuses are due July 1 and the cba expires later
