Has it ever been officially confirmed the draft will be 7 rounds. I think that is just a reporting error on TSN's part as I have never seen that number anywhere else.

I have seen it as 7 in articles and 9 in others. Its 9, according to Woodlief's last article below:

PLUS, whomever wins the lottery gets #1 overall...in other words, the 30th ranked team can jump to #1. This would move every team back 1 slot.

QUESTION: Is there a final word on the 1-30 rankings? Is it indeed based on all teams' past 3 year point averages??

Also, the USA TODAY / Kyle Woodlief article leaves me confused, when reading the last paragraph:

"Clubs will draft from 1 to 30 in the order the balls are picked. The first-round order will be reversed for the second round and flip on an alternating basis through the nine rounds."

DOES THIS MEAN: all 30 balls are selected, and their order determines positions 1-30?!? That can't be. (?)

So, if your team missed the playoffs the past 3 years and has 3 balls, they could still end up drafting 30th overall??

How is that a fair system?

It's already too late for a fair system, since each team should have had only one ball if fairness was the goal...

This system gives certain teams more chances and that's already more than those teams deserve. If they are unlucky, tough ****. I will personally rejoice as I don't think anybody deserves the extra balls.

I have to agree. With all the roster movements that are going to have to be made after the CBA is ratified, no team is going to be close to the same as they were at the end of 03/04.

With only 30 balls in the lottery, that would give the NHL an opportunity to ensure the lottery would not be fixed by doing the draw like FIFA and UEFA, where they draw a position, and then a team to fill that spot (not to mention it's always televised live on TV and the internet). Instead, we're going to see this weighted lottery ....or we'll see the results as the lottery is behind closed doors with media banned ...where they select 1, 2, 3, etc.

I'm still convinced the NY Rangers ball comes out first. I can only hope that some pissed off GM runs to grab it and smash it to show the paint that it'll be filled with.

Let me state for the record that if the Rangers don't get to pick Crosby, feed me those words, I'll gladly eat them.

The NHL isn't really reporting it. They're just using the same CP story that everyone else is. Unless someone like McKenzie can clarify it, we might have to wait until Friday to find out.

They might just want 7 rounds this year so they can get it over with in one day and move to other things. But really, if you can do 7, will whipping through 2 more really be too much trouble?

Teams like Detroit and Ottawa have good systems despite lower picks... Montreal has probably the 3rd best... Edmontonmust be top 5... how do you really believe other teams don't deserve extra balls? Do you really want the NHL to forever have Detroit, Colorado and New Jersey as the three best with Pittsburgh, Chicago and Florida the bottom 3?

It's a change; certain teams had their moment in the sun, the pendulum is swinging and that's how the business is, like it or not. Why did Tampa and Calgary make the finals? Because they're young teams that are becoming the new dynasties. Sorry, that's how it goes. Philadelphia, New Jersey and Toronto are at the end of their reigns, just look at the rosters. They're winding down, you wanna give them the top 5 picks and have them rebuild right away into what they ALWAYS have been? :dunno:

Consider it socialism.

I wouldn't say the Flyers are on the way down. They have a nice group of prospects on the way.

This draft is expected to be an abbreviated version with a bit of ceremony for the first rounders, but then a quick rattling of names over the next eight rounds

Seachd, you're pretty right.Like you said the other time, Mackenzie's source was maybe wrong. You made a good point, I think, they'd do 7 rounds to complete all the draft in one day.We won't know till' the ratification, I guess.

If they're going to fix it, I really hope that he goes to L.A. and not N.Y.

It is absolute stupidity not to televise the lottery. One has to assume it WILL be fixed as that is the only reason to do it behind closed doors. Who is going to believe it was completely legitimate if the Rangers get Crosby?

Don't have a cow dudes, fixed or not, Crosby will be a free agent at 25.

Whatever team that drafts him has about 5 years to get their arses in gear and suround him with enough talent to build a Cup contender or else he'll be gone. Heck he might fly the coop regardless of how well his original team tries to please him.

A couple of seasons in NY or LA wouldn't bother me much if it actually helps the bottom line somewhat.

Whether or not the lottery will be televised isn't important. You can still fix a lottery with tv cameras on. Heck, I once saw David Copperfield make the Statue of Liberty dissapear on one of his TV specials. Now, call me a pessimist but I'm pretty sure it never actually went anywhere.

Nope, what needs to be done is have a respected company supervise the lottery and the results. The NBA does this. They don't televise their lottery, just the results. Here's what the NBA does (if you want to read the entire article, go to http://www.nba.com/bobcats/lottery_happenings_050522.html):

"The actual Lottery procedure will take place in a separate room prior to the national broadcast with NBA officials and representatives of the participating teams and the accounting firm of Ernst & Young in attendance.

Following the drawing, team logo cards will be inserted into envelopes marked 1 through 14 by an Ernst & Young representative. These envelopes then will be sealed and brought on-stage, where the announcement of the Lottery results will be made by NBA Deputy Commissioner Russ Granik. A second representative from each participating team will be seated on-stage. Neither the Deputy Commissioner nor the team representatives will be informed of the Lottery results prior to the opening of the envelopes."
