Oh my. That has to be the most demoralizing goal I have ever seen. Anyway congrats to Union they were a true team in every sense of the word. Extremely impressed with them throughout this tournament.

I would have never guessed this Minny team giving up this many goals. Not shocked that Union won, but at all the style points. Congrats to them.

Gostisbehere 1G 1A +6 in a 6-4 game. :amazed:

Edit: 1G 2A +7 now. These guys weren't kidding when they compared him to a young Jason Woolley

I can think of one scored two days ago that was much more demoralizing.

I thought he was great in last year's WJC. Definitely a good prospect for Philly.

Well this season is under wraps. A pretty good one at that. I'm already predicting that BC runs away with the title next year (Sorry LDS).

Frankly I'm happy Union won even if I was rooting for Minnesota. Fasching got a big goal in there. Gostisbehere had a completely dominating game.

Union .. at least I got one thing right in my bracket. :win:

Congrats! :handclap: You won the group! :yo: Only one to have Union College winning and because of them winning - you got 8 points and won the group with 18 points to Sabresfans65 16 points. He had Minnesota so it came down to whoevers pick won the championship game would win the group. Sabretooth was the closest to the overall goals in the tourney - he picked 93 goals while the final total was 88 goals. I'll post the final group standings sometime on Sunday along all the links to articles/boxscores etc from tonights championship game.

Once again, congrats to Union College Dutchmen on their first-ever National Championship. Man, Buffalo has got to host the Frozen Four again. We just had a couple of awesome/exciting days of hockey! We definiately need that excitement again here in Western New York!

Union Wins First Title With 7-4 Victory Against Top-Seed Minnesota - Mike Wisniewski - NCAA.com - Saturday, April 12.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - Union won its first NCAA hockey title Saturday night, scoring three times in a 1:54 span in the first period in a 7-4 victory against Minnesota on Saturday night. Mike Vecchione tied it at 2 with 4:01 left in the first, Eli Lichtenwald gave the Dutchman the lead 57 seconds later, and Daniel Ciampini capped the spree with 2:57 to go.

Big Man, Big Impact - Gostisbehere's Contributions Key In Union's Championship - Denise Maloof - NCAA.com - Saturday, April 12.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvanuia - Union's big guys played big Saturday night as the third-ranked Dutchmen beat top-ranked Minnesota to win their first NCAA Division I title. Matt Bodie and Shayne Gostisbehere have been Union’s brand-name defensive stalwarts all season. They only polished those reputations before 18,000 at the Wells Fargo Center and before a national television audience. Both did it by scoring goals - Gostisbehere notched Union’s first and Bodie supplied the seventh. Both also took care of their first priority, defense. Afterward, they also exhibited perspective.

Too Many Mistakes - Minnesota's Mistakes Doom Gophers' Chance At Title - Denise Maloof - NCAA.com - Saturday, April 12.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - The steam evaporated for Minnesota in Saturday night’s NCAA Division I championship game. The top-ranked Golden Gophers fell 7-4 to third-ranked Union, a defeat that was as finite as it sounds. Combine Union’s timely execution on both ends of the ice, and Minnesota mistakes in both ends, and the Golden Gophers watched the Dutchmen celebrate their first NCAA title instead of celebrating Minnesota’s sixth NCAA crown.

Gostisbehere Powers Union Past Minnesota For Its First National Championship - Jim Connelly - Senior Writer - USCHO.com - Saturday, April 12.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - If Saturday’s national championship game ends up being the final collegiate game for Union defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, he picked the perfect night to put forward one of the best performances in recent memory of the Frozen Four.

Scoring a key goal in the game’s opening period and adding two assists, Gostisbehere finished the game a plus-7 as he was on the ice for all of Union’s goals in a 7-4 victory over Minnesota to clinch the first national title for the program in its 23-year history of Division I hockey.

The performance earned Gostisbehere, a draft pick of the Philadelphia Flyers, the tournament’s most outstanding player honor in front of a crowd of 18,742 at the First Union Center, a venue at which he one day expects to play professional hockey.

Congratulations to Union on their first title!

I heard some comments last night expressing surprise at the outcome (game and tourney). Clearly those folks don't follow NCAA hockey, at least not closely. They weren't a fluke #3 (I admittedly had BC winning it all). Union was an all-around outstanding team from the beginning. I saw them up close and personal last fall and while the games were close, you could tell they had a certain offensive swagger. Historically the program has been shaky, but they've turned it around big time and they absolutely deserved this. You don't beat two powerhouse programs in the Frozen Four without being a powerhouse yourself. And as mentioned, great tournament. As usual. Makes me proud.

‏@GriffsHockey - Tony Capobianco Signs Contract with the Adirondack Phantoms of the AHL:
http://www.gogriffs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=20500&ATCLID=209465529

Capobianco Joins Adirondack Of The AHL - Canisius College Athletics - GoGriffs.com - Monday, April 14.

The most decorated goalie in the school’s history, Tony Capobianco of the Canisius College hockey team inked a contract to join the Adirondack Phantoms of the AHL on Monday.Capobianco enjoyed a record-breaking career in his four seasons at Canisius. He finished his tenure in March with school records in saves (3,061), save percentage (.920), goals against average (2.71) and shutouts (eight).

The Mississauga, Ontario also owns four-single-season records set during the 2012-13 campaign, while leading the Griffs to their first conference championship. He set the program’s standards in saves (1,256), save percentage (.929), shutouts (four) and goaltender victories (18). His 1,256 saves rank as the 12th-most in NCAA history and the most since the 1988-89 campaign.

Capobianco also proved to be a clutch postseason player during his career, helping Canisius to the 2013 Atlantic Hockey Championship and a second appearance in the title game in 2014. In 13 career Atlantic Hockey Tournament games, Capobianco owns an 11-2-0 record, 2.35 goals against average, .936 save percentage and three shutouts. A member of the 2013 Atlantic Hockey All-Tournament Team, he owns the top two saves marks in the tournament’s history (249 in 2014 and 235 in 2013).

Capobianco is the second Griffin to sign an AHL contract after the season ended in March (Ben Danford joined the Manchester Monarchs). The netminder also appeared in two games with Elmira of the ECHL this year, recording 38 saves - including 31 in his only start with the Jackals.

Phantoms Add Serratore And Capobianco - PhantomsHockey.com - Monday, April 14.

The Adirondack Phantoms have announced they have added forward Tom Serratore (Minnesota - NCAA) and goaltender Tony Capobianco (Canisius - NCAA and Elimra - ECHL) on Amateur Tryout contracts (ATO). http://www.phantomshockey.com/pages/news/articles/20140414.asp

Amy Moritz ‏@amymoritz - A glance at Twitter shows me @GriffsHockey Tony Capobianco signed an AHL contract with Adirondack.
Second Griffin to go AHL this year.

Joe Ray ‏@joeray119 - @amymoritz - That makes Capobianco teammates with former @NiagaraUHockey goaltender Carsen Chubak.

Update - Canisius and Niagara's Class of 2014 In The Pros - Amy Moritz - Buffalo News Sports Reporter - BuffaloNews.com - Tuesday, April 15.

Ben Danford never missed a game in his four-year career at Canisius College. Not one single game. The defenseman from Minnesota played in 158 games for the Golden Griffins -- the 13th longest streak in NCAA history. So of course he gets injured in his first pro hockey stint.

Danford signed an amateur tryout contract with the Manchester Monarchs, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, when the Griffs' season ended in the Atlantic Hockey title game. He played in three games for the Monarchs and had a plus-one rating before injuring his knee last Sunday. Danford said it was an awkward hit where his knee bent inwards. The injury appears to be short term and Danford is already working out and putting the knee through rehab.

LaxSabre - I know Woodhouse posted a link to this article on Hudson Fasching in the prospects thread but I figured I would also post it here since well this is a college hockey thread and he was a factor in Minnesotas run to the Frozen Four. The article includes video of all four Minnesota goals in the Championship Game. Fasching scored the fourth goal which at the time brought Minnesota within one goal - 5-4 - late third period. Unfortunately Union scored two more goals and won the game and their first ever National Championship by a 7-4 score. Hopefully I get to post many articles on him next season on another run to the Frozen Four for him and Minnesota Gophers hockey.

A Quick Look At Hudson Fasching's Freshman Year At Minnesota -
Amy Moritz - Buffalo News Sports Reporter - BuffaloNews.com - Tuesday, April 15.

It was an impressive freshman campaign for Hudson Fasching, which is good news for Buffalo Sabres fans. The 6-2, 207 pound forward was named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team. He played in 40 games for the Golden Gophers this season with 14 goals and 16 assists. He scored six power play goals and was a plus-17. He scored in the NCAA championship game, a late tally for Minnesota which fell to Union, 7-4, in the game last Saturday.

Fasching was aquired by the Sabres on trade deadline day as part of a deal with the Los Angeles Kings which also sent Nick Deslauries to Buffalo in exchange for Brayden McNabb, Jonathon Parker and two second-round draft picks.

In seven postseason games to finish the 2013-14 season, Conacher recorded eight points, three goals, five assists and a plus/minus rating of +8.

Adirondack Phantoms ‏@phantomshockey - FINAL: Adirondack 5 - Syracuse 4. Game-Winner in the 9th round of the shootout for Ben Holmstrom. First career pro win for Tony Capobianco!

Starting goalie Carsen Chubak (Niagara University) left the game after one period with an unspecified injury and Capobianco entered in relief to begin the second period in his pro debut and third-career professional game. He was tested right away and made a fine glove-save on a Jon Marchessault breakaway to quickly get into rhythm. Capobianco stuffed away the attempt of Joel Vermin in the bottom of the ninth round to earn his first career win. He had just joined the Phantoms on Sunday night after having appeared in two games in the ECHL with Elmira the past couple of weeks. This relief appearance against the Crunch represented his AHL debut.

Canisius Hockey ‏@GriffsHockey - Congrats to Tony on his first career win. MT: @phantomshockey: FINAL: Adirondack 5 - Syracuse 4. First career pro win for Tony Capobianco!

Campus Watch Blog - BuffaloNews.com - http://blogs.buffalonews.com/campus/2014/04/capobianco-notches-first-professional-win.html

LaxSabre - Congrats Tony on your first pro win! hope its the start of many more! Hopefully you stay with the Phantoms next season (and be a goalie duo with Carsen) and he gets to play the Amerks in Rochester so I can go see him play. (Wouldn't be a problem for Tony to play at the Blue Cross Arena as the Atlantic Hockey Tournament Semifinals and Finals are held there so hes used to playing there.)

@GriffsHockey alum Tony Capobianco gets his first AHL start for @phantomshockey tonight.

LaxSabre - Unfortunately the Phantoms blew a 2-0 third period and lost to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 3-2 in overtime. Tony Capobianco made 24 saves for his first loss as a professional. Theres a good chance Tony will play in the Phantoms season finale at Hershey tonight.

Taken from the game article - PhantomsHockey.com -

Friday also marked the professional debut for Flyers’ prospect Shayne Gostisbehere. Gostisbehere, who was drafted in the third round of the 2012 draft by the Flyers, was signed to an entry level contract on April 15, fresh off his win with Union College in the Frozen Four Tournament which took place last weekend at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA.

Gostisbehere fit right in. He pushed hard all game, playing with a physical edge, and he was not scared to rip shots on net. He finished with three shots in the game, and an even rating in what was a solid debut from the young defenseman.

Gostisbehere's entire team from Union College trekked up from Schenectady to enjoy the night as well. And the national champions were announced and acknowledged in the third period. The group of Gostisbehere rooters screamed from Section G on some of the "Ghost's" first ever pro plays in the first period making it previous obvious to 5,500 others in the building whom they were there to see.
