How much of those numbers were puffed-up playing with those top 2 lines in VAN? You got a lotta' guys to focus on there - seems that would open things up for any kid with even a little talent. If that's his max ability then he's not even gonna' be as productive as Leggy - who only played with elite talent for a couple seasons. Also, seems to me we already have a version of this guy in Hook, although I'm waiting to see some sustained O for more than a dozen late-in-season games. Rather see that money spent to keep Ribs around and see what we got with Hook, I think.

NOTE: I'm a canuck fan so I understand if this sounds like sour grapes.

-great passing, offensive vision etc.
-terrible skating and in particular his first few steps
-tendency to stop moving his feet defensively which compounds his acceleration problem. most opposition players have little issue losing him to get open.
-very little defensive commitment which compounds everything

It's the defensive issues which have held him back. At this point he's not much more than a PP specialist you can't trust to have on the ice 5-on-5. And yes he's soft. Time is running out on this player which is unfortunate given the talent he clearly has. Since he has set foot in the NHL he has believed that offensive talent will be his meal ticket and hasn't progressed one iota on the defensive side if things. There is a reason he has trouble getting icetime on the worst team in the league.

Thanks to both of you. Insight is what I was looking for.

Talented one-dimensional player who displays little defensive awareness or effort to improve it. Soft as well who has bio-mechanics of stubby legs that leads to a chopping skating style of slow acceleration and poor top-end speed, not things that can be improved with training.

Fair value at his price and in the right circumstances he can be a useful contributor on the scoreboard, but not something to build around which is a shame since he was touted as having captain material when drafted. Some players grow with maturity, unless he turns things around Hodgson seems to be surrendering his potential.

As a Sabres fan, I can honestly say, nonononononono. He has decent offensive ability, but his lack of defense more than makes up for it. Not sure if I've seen him take the body all season. His thing is basically, get close enough to barely reach the puck carrier with his stick, start coasting, and try to poke at them. Also, not a strong skater.

Wow, how opinions change. Wasn't this guy projected as a sure-fire top center when he was with the Canucks? Seems like I remember him being very highly touted.

To me, his defensive play is more or less a work ethic issue and I think that's his main draw back. If he can get going enough to be willing to play some real defense, he'd be a really good asset, but from what I've seen, not big on his attitude (going off both contract negotiations and play).

Considering his career points per game is 0.56 in Buffalo compared to 0.49 in Vancouver, and he has played more than two-thirds of his NHL career with the Sabres, I'd say they probably weren't inflated at all.

Hodgson would likely suit up on our third line, and so far this year, he hasn't been much better than our third line as far as production is concerned. I'd pass unless he were available at a bargain.

Not to mention that he's only been a plus player once since coming into the league and that was with Vancouver where they really protected him. You are oh so right about his skating. Short choppy little strides that take him nowhere. For some reason I think he might end up being a Leaf.

As a Canucks fan, I can tell you two things.

1. He only played about 70 of those 230 games in Vancouver and it was his rookie season. Thus, he only had around 35 points. Hence, his seasons in Buffalo were more productive.

And

2. Hodgson was the 3rd line Center. He didnt play on the Sedins or Keslers line, except for maybe a bit of time on the pp, but if i remember correctly he was the 2nd pp unit.
