Wow, if accurate, that Caps SOG differential over time is very telling. Of course, you've got multiple variables involved. But it seems pretty safe to assume that a change in coaching staff/system is a huge factor.

I would be curious to look at other teams.

You're right, I think that's huge. The top 3 teams in O-zone faceoffs were LA, Boston and Detroit while the top 3 in D-zone faceoffs were Toronto, Buffalo, and Edmonton.

I suspect what it shows is good teams don't play in there own end as much as bad teams. Tried looking up stats for number of face-offs per team on nhl.com to back that up one way or the other but couldn't find any.

Boston would fit the good team theory. From watching Doughty live in Guelph he clears the zone as well as anybody so he's a big reason they don't spend much time in there own zone.

As for Detroit that might be interesting, middle of the pack team good but not awesome defense. Could be luck and variance but could be from team strategy. Anyone want to chime in with an opinion on Detroit?
