Taylor is a good QB when your team has the lead. He's safe and will sometimes pull off a great play.

Taylor is a below average QB when your team is trailing. There is a reason why his record is horrendous when his team trails by 4 points at anytime in the game (3-16 as of November 2 2017). He has accuracy problems and he doesn't have the confidence to throw it into tight windows.

He at one time had a line-up of Watkins, Woods, Goodwin, Hogan, Clay, and McCoy. This line-up, especially Watkins, was consistently open and Taylor never saw it, didn't throw it, held onto it for too long, or decided to run prematurely.

He is just ok. His ability will win a few games and his lack of ability will cost them a few games.

It comes down to options. The Browns tried to trade for Garappolo and Alex Smith. There are a few free agent QBs, but they all have issues of their own, including the issue of convincing one you like to sign for a team set to take a QB #1 overall.

Maybe there was a better option than Taylor available in trade, but the ones anyone would get excited about would have cost a lot more than Taylor. And you have to ask how much you’re willing to trade for one season of a starting QB.
