To be clear he did not this on TSN, he said this on his podcast but I am using the TSN button because he doesn't have his own button and he works at TSN.

Why is he the only insider without his own button?

Anyway he mentioned on his podcast when asked about Ekholm that Ryan McDonough name was also out there but he's tougher to move because he has trade protection.

So the question becomes who is more likely?

because surely they won't move both

From what I saw in is last year in TB McDonough had slowed down considerably… He don’t think he is worth more than 3.5M$ for 2 years but he sign for 6.5M$ for 4years (including 2023)… Nashville might need to pay to get rid of that contract, Ekholm is a lot easier to trade but that not the one you want to get rid of…

These guys are stealing from each other’s playbook. Oh, Preds aren’t in a playoff spot let’s try to imagine who we can put on our deadline trade board from them. It’s all BS. These names that are “out there” are only out there amongst other media rumor mongers aren’t they?

No one is taking that contract with out retention of sending money back.

His underlying numbers this year are franking terrible.
No bonuses which helps them
But high salary next year
6.75 AAV.
NTC
And he’s a left shot.

Good luck

Would likely be a hard trade for nashville if he truly was available. Started out the year rough as Hynes was on the struggle bus trying to figure out where he best fit on the team. Has looked really solid since moving next to Josi. Not sure if thats just a byproduct of Josi being great or McDonagh playing better. Would be interested to see his underlying metrics isolated fir the last 8 games.

Either way, trade protection, high salary and cap, somewhat declining performance, i just dont see this as a viable trade route unless you come across a team in desperate need of LHD and questionable GM capabilities... like Edmonton.

Josi - McDonagh since paired together:

17 GF
3 GA

Enough said.

McDonagh has value. He's just getting older and a bit overpaid. Preds would get solid trade value if they were willing to take a contract back. Fans trying to devalue McDonagh because he is in modest decline are out of line.

Here is an impressive stat. McDonagh has never had a (-) season his entire career. However, his Corsi is around 38% this season and was around 40-45% with Tampa. Starts in the D zone 67% of the time.

The main issue is he has 3 more seasons. Age 34-36. So yeah, if the Preds can take back a contract who also has 3 seasons left after this year at around half his cap it ish, then there could be a trade to be made.

Preds likely get value if they just keep him and he stays with Josi. I think he is a good for for Josi.

Preds already have what they want out of McDonagh right now. Ever since he came back from injury and paired with Josi he has been exactly what Poile was hoping for when he picked him up.

These media guys need to come up with more sensible rumors. The Preds are 1 point back of a playoff spot with 2 games in hand. They're not trading their #2 or #3 defensemen. They don't fit the stereotype of "MUST CONTEND vs. MUST REBUILD!" They're not going to do either, and are fine with being right in the middle. So it's just ignorance of the market that these guys are trying to add McDonagh or Ekholm to their trade boards.

And then past that, are they even aware of the Cap considerations? Teams aren't taking on Cap with term. Not only is Poile not interested in trading either of his #2 or #3 defensemen, he's certainly not looking to just dump them, or take dumps back, or retain salary on players who are doing exactly what he wants them to do, exactly what he expected when he chose to pay them. The media guys need to work a little harder.

Generally being right in the middle is the worst place to be.

Regardless, these media folks would do better to put the Preds on their "buyers" list instead of their "sellers" list. That's more Poile's MO.

He'll probably try to fill some perceived lesser hole at the deadline, like he thought he was doing picking up Lauzon last year, or Gudbranson the year before, or Simmonds, Boyle, Hartman, on through the ages back to Gaustad etc. That's who Poile has always been at the Trade Deadline.

So in other words, Poile has realized that spending big on 3 LHD is not the winning formula?

Either McDonagh is moved, if he can be and approves the destination. Or Ekholm is going.

I do still believe McDonagh could be the sort of presence he was in Tampa. But that was a pretty unique circumstance. A matchup 2nd pairing defenceman at that age, on that contract is a bit of a luxury. If you've got the scenario to do it...he'd still be an okay addition. But few teams have that.
