I've started a CHL Rankings portion on my blog.

Rankings will be updated every Monday. I also post on nights after games, with updated scores and standings.

Obviously it's very early in the season but as the season goes on and more games are played then the numbers will be more concrete.

I also cover the NHL as well as Major League Soccer, the National Football League, NCAA Football and the CFL.

If that's how you want to rank them awesome, but using just the team's win % doesn't factor in the strength of their victories. Seattle has won 8 games, yes, they are tied for 1st in their conference yes but 3 of their wins are shootout wins. One extra missed shot and they are 5-5. One of the reasons why they are not in my Top 10. Their only quality win (Regulation or Overtime, shootouts are essentially counted as ties in my system) is over Medicine Hat. Their other 4 wins are over Vancouver (1 win in 10 games), Lethbridge (1 win in 9 games), Kootenay (5 wins in 10 games) and Tri-City (4 wins in 11 games). A combined 11 wins in 40 games or a combined win percentage of .275.

Meanwhile the Spokane Chiefs, who have the same record, have 7 wins in Regulation or Overtime, 5 of those have a win percentage over .500 (Victoria x2 at .545, Everett at .667, Kelowna at .625 and Red Deer at .545). Their 2 wins over Tri-City (4 in 11) are their "worst".

By ranking them your way, Seattle and Spokane are exactly the same, but ranking them my way, you can see that Spokane at the current time, with the games they have played are clearly the stronger team.

I maybe agree with what you said about Seattle a bit though, but they are ahead of Spokane in the standings, I think that Spokane have played better in their wins and are only 2nd because of the alphabet, still, as I said it's early, you can't really say that Seattle's wins are weaker because of that.

Like are Blainville really that good, or are they just in a weak league, cause the next best team is a fair ways down from them, but again, it's a weighted theory, rankings all the teams in the CHL is never going to be perfect, no matter how it's done, cause they don't play each other until the Mem Cup. Don't see how you can have Guelph that high, I mean even if their wins have been decent, their losses might not be.

Very true, there is no perfect rating system. The only way to truly get a perfect ranking system you'd have to see interleague play and that is never going to happen. I have been trying to use the numbers to see if I could figure out some sort of formula to weight the league and currently I haven't found anything that I like. If I do find something like that, I'll probably wait until next season to include it unless it's just something that blows my mind.

Re: Seattle, when it comes to the actual standings and getting points I agree that a win is a win no matter how you get it. In my system though I didn't want to have a shootout win positively or negatively affect anyone because it really is just a skills competition. I was talking to some friends earlier before that game about the Thunderbirds and we all agreed that even just a point from that game would be a huge score for them considering where they have been in the last few years, so to win even in the shootout was a big deal. I'm very happy to see them doing well, I'm not a fan per se but I always like to see the US Division do well in the West.

As for Guelph, they are ranked very high because so far they have 4 quality wins (Erie @ .667, Oshawa @ .778, London @ .875 & Kingston @ .778), 2 so-so wins (Ottawa @ .500, Owen Sound @ .400), 2 losses to good teams (London @ .125 LP, Oshawa @ .222 LP) and 1 bad loss (Belleville @ .800 LP). I of course agree that when it comes to the true integrity of the game, that shootout wins are less valuable and it should maybe not be a part of it, however, like it or not, they are now a very important skill and part of the game, so I count those wins the same.

How could it be rude, it didn't sound rude anyhow, not sure how you got that, if anything I was being rude by posting my own ranking in your thread, hope you don't mind.

To break ties as much as possible, I'm saying that if a team loses in a shootout, it's better than losing in OT, so they will be placed higher, I know this might be a bit like what you said about teams winning in the shootout, well I guess I'm doing the opposite, it was maybe the best, most simple way I could come up with to break ties, then I will go to goal difference. Less games played will have you lower down too, unless you think less losses is the way to go.

Why I have these teams ranked so low:
Seattle: In my formula, you are not rewarded or punished for shootout wins or losses. Seattle has 3 shootout wins so far which already puts them at a disadvantage when it comes to accumulating a positive score. Add in the fact that of Seattle regulation or overtime wins only 1 has come from a team with a win % above .500, and 2 have come against teams with a win % of .100. Not a very good regulation/OT win resume so far. The next 5 games don't do the T-birds any favor either as they have Kamloops, PG, Swift Current, Tri-City and Vancouver. The Swift Current game should be a good one and one that they will need to win before a shootout in order to climb the Evans Rankings ladder.

Rimouski: Rimouski is ranked low due to bad luck. 7 wins on the season really aren't that bad but 2 were in a shootout and 2 were against winless Shawinigan. Right there they have 4 zeros were they could have some positive numbers. Unfortunately the shootout wins will remain zeros but if/when Shawinigan starts getting results, this will have a positive impact on Rimouski.
